Having oral surgery, can't decide if to wean? Advice, encouragement, honest opions?

Hello! I used to post quite a bit when I was pregnant with babes # 3 and #4 (went on to have wonderful happy homebirths because of these forums!) Now, I need help with my daughter. She turns 1 year in a couple weeks on November 18th.

a little background: We've had a great nursing relationship. Exclusively nursed until the intro of selected solids, and a brief few day period when she was 4 months and do to an injury and radioactive testing, we had to supplement formula for around 4 days (and I pumped/dumped) ...even though it seemed my supply dropped by about half, within 2-3 days of nursing again, it picked right back up to where we were no problem!

so, to my current situation....I have to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed December 4th. This gives me less than a month to either A) wean, or B) try to ride through it like we did when she was 4 months. The problem is it will be for a longer period than previously...i can not nurse for at least 24 hours after the last narcotic painkiller is taken, and i will be on them for at least 5 days post surgery. This means around a full week, give or take a day, we will not be nursing.

She only feeds 2-3 times a day as is. I would like to keep going through the winter months to keep the immunities flowing. (both her AND myself seem to benefit thru this, with 4 kids under the age of 7 yrs, this is important to me!) Hubby wants me to wean, as breastfeeding dries me up and takes away any and all sex drive that i *might* have. if we weaned my marriage would benefit and i wouldn't be in engorgement pain or trying to pump or deal with being sopping wet while recovering from surgery. At the same time, i'm not sure about letting go of those immunities. (i also only have a small pump that half heartedly works some of the time. truth be told, i probably wouldn't pump much during the recovery period except to relieve engorgement as needed)

is 2-3 feedings a day enough for immunity protection to begin with? what would you do? i have 3ish weeks to decide.

thank you!

Wow- I'm sorry that you are going to have to have surgery. You have been given HORRIBLY WRONG information! You can nurse right after anesthesia, even down and out heavy in the hospital. Once you can hold the baby/kid you can nurse again. Also there are TONS of pain medications you can take and nurse- Vicodin, Percoset, Darvocet, Norco are all L2 or L3 meds (meaning safe to nurse while taking- just watch for an overly sleepy baby) Dr. Hale is THE doctor for nursing and medications. He has a website and lots of books. If you know what medications you will be on just ask me(i have his book) or check at http://www.kellymom.com and to search Dr. Hale's med list here is his website http://neonatal.ttuhsc.edu/cgi-bin/d...s&access=guest for medications.

I hope you don't nurse, or use formula, because there is NO need- neither is there a need to be in horrible pain and NOT take your much needed Pain medication while you nurse. I have 4 kids and have been on all of the above medications while nursing. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need further help.

I agree witht he PP. No need to wean. You can nurse right after surgery - if you are safe to hold baby then you are safe to nurse.

Here are pages for info on medication http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/anesthetics.html http://www.kellymom.com/health/meds/pain-meds.html

And surgery: http://www.kellymom.com/health/illness/mom-surgery.html

good luck with the surgery!

thank you guys SO much! the links were extremely helpful and I now feel confident to keep nursing through it. The article on conscious sedation was especially helpful as I know that is the type of anesthesia they plan on using. I also found it interesting that they usually send home the same type of pain killers for post op c-section mama's!

thank you again!

Totally, totally agree with pps, so glad you're feeling better about it.

If you're in the UK, you might also find the Breastfeeding Network pages helpful: http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org....and-factsheets

If you know exactly which meds you'll be taking, you can e-mail or ring the BfN Drugline (the no. is on the site). They are fab, and very helpful.
