Severe diaper rash, is this the right place to look for advice?

I am asking this question for a family member, who is having a severe diaper rash problem. I searched the forums and wasn't sure if I should post here or health and healing.

To maybe further confuse matters, it is an adult (my dad) having the problem. Said adult has constant BM leakage due to two specific medical reasons that are unlikely to be corrected.

Regular OTC creams haven't worked. Anyone have a natural remedy or homemade mixture to try? Dad is very open to alternative remedies.

Two thoughts.

- Is he using cloth? If so, check the detergent he is using and how the diapers are being washed. It could be a reaction to the detergent.

- If he is using disposables...are they being changed frequently enough? The leakage could be causing the irritation. Also, the chemicals in the disposables might be a problem. Maybe change brands.

- Finally, I am a HUGE fan of the Northern Essence line of diaper rash creams and salves. All natural and very, very effective. Perhaps try those.

Good luck. He must be miserable.

No, not using cloth. I suggested that but he doesn't want to deal with the laundry issue.

I am sure the disposables are being changed frequently, he is a very clean person - like two showers a day and constant hand washing, avoiding touching surfaces, etc.

Which now makes me think that might be part of the problem, if he is maybe scrubbing the rashed area too hard, it gets irritated even more and so on. Might need to mention that to him.....

I will mention the changing brands.

Will look into the brand you recommended, thanks so much!

A diaper rash that won't heal needs to be seen by a Dr as it might be yeast or a secondary bacterial infection. In my experience (with babies) any rash that doesn't clear up with frequent changing and cleaning is not going to respond to a change in diaper cream.

We like the Aveeno diaper cream and also find that using cloth wipes with water and a drop of baby shampoo gets the bum cleaner and doesn't irritate as much as disposable wipes.

I'm sure you've looked into everything WRT to the leakage, but is there anything he can take/eat to make it less acidic?

Hope you find something to resolve this!
