What do ammonia burns look like??

My DD has been getting dipe rash off/on for a while now. She also has a ton of food sensitivities, but I'm now wondering if it's an ammonia burn. Her bum cheeks look they they've been slapped- bright red. And they're a little rough. When the redness goes away, they feel rough and start to get a little peely. Is this an ammonia burn?? It's really just on the cheeks.

We're using mostly prefolds. But I have noticed it when she sits in a sposie too long, too. And it usually happens overnight- last night we used a GM dipe, and her cheeks were bright red this morning.

I just stripped the dipes a few weeks ago. A friend told me maybe I'm not using ENOUGH detergent. Is that possible?? Too much, too little. It's really hard to find just the right amount!!

TIA

What type of detergent are you using? How much are you using?

I was having the same issues. I figured out that I wasn't using enough detergent (Country Save). Also DS2 is somewhat sensitive to synthetics.

We're using All Free & Clear, the HE one. We have a front-loader. I use a VERY small amount- maybe the size of a quarter. It's only about 1/8 of a 1/2 cap, if that makes sense.

What did you do??

Nope, red, rough peely skin is yeast. Go see the doc but that is always what it looks like for us. I just put some Lotrimin cream on twice a day and it cleared up. No special washing of the diapers, either - yeast lives on your skin anyway.

Really?? You think it might be yeast? I thought that was more of a bumpy rash. Maybe it can be different for different bums. :P I've been putting Burt's Bees on it and that really seems to be helping.

I'm using RLR in our wash tonight w/ a little bit more detergent. Then I'm going to rinse, rinse, rinse. If that doesn't work, we're going to try a new detergent.

Thanks for all the help!

Well, for us, that is what it looked like - rough and red, then it would peel off. Worse in the a.m. b/c of being wet all night. Ammonia burns were red, not rough, and they would eventually ulcerate.

we have an he front loader and use country save. we use 1/2 of the reccommended amount for a front loader. i would try using more detergent, and then rinse a ton. a quarter's worth does not sound like enough to me, even for a front loader. it may not hurt to try the lotrimin too and see if that helps! that's what did it for dd1 way back when she had a yeasty rash.

I use ALL F & C, but didn't use it for diapers. It used to say "whitening enzymes" on the label, but now it says "whitening agents"

I decided not to use this for diapers because of the "enzymes" Could that be the problem?

I was thinking of switching detergents. The All F&C was working, till now. I actually talked to somebody this weekend who said my front loader is not using enough water and the dipes aren't getting thoroughly cleaned b/c of that. Does anyone have a suggestion for how to trick my machine into using more water?? I'm so mad we got a front loader!!!!

You can add up to 3 extra gallons of water without harming your front loader. Just pour it in AFTER the machine fills with water, either through the dispenser OR through the door.
