I was unprepared for the sadness!!!

I avoid sad movies as a rule, because I can get in a funk for days afterwards...so anyway...I read the book Black Beauty as a child and remember it being sad and all, but nothing like the movie!!!My six year old and I decided not to watch it again even though it was a beautiful movie just because it was so darn sad!!

Are there any other children's movies I should be aware of?! I already know about 'Bridge to Terabithia

I am extremely susceptible to The Sad. Do not watch:

Any version of The Yearling or Old Yeller
Bridge to Terabithia is EXCELLENT, but don't watch it
Lassie Come Home (it's OK in the end, but it makes me cry in the middle)
Any version of The Little Match Girl. They sneakily included a very good Disney animated short version of it with one of the recent DVD releases -- maybe it was Sleeping Beauty? -- anyway, DON'T WATCH IT. OMG, the pain!
I remember Sounder being sad, don't remember whether it ends up being OK.
A Little Princess (again, happy ending if you get that far)
But the worst of all is The Velveteen Rabbit. It's like the nuclear bomb of sad books/movies, laying waste to everything in its path.

Oh, I have seen `Bridge to Terabithia`. Thanks for the heads up on the others, in particular the `Velveteen Rabbit`. I loved the story as a child, and may have unknowingly stumbled upon the movie, only to be blown away by the `Nuclear Bomb of Sadness`Thanks for saving me the pain and aftermath. I have also seen `The Yearling`. OMG And I will never, ever, ever watch old yeller again Stupid coming of age sadness and death

Oh man, that story kills me. I have a well-loved stuffed dog and earlier this year I made him a bed in a box so he could stay under my bed. I still feel like I have betraaaaaayed him! *sniffle*

Also, "The Painted Veil." I felt awful.

In fifth grade, we got to watch Old Yeller as a "treat." The teacher had to call my mom to come get me me due to the hysteria.

Don't forget Dumbo.

Is that the Black Beauty with some famous guys back before they were particularly famous? David Thewlis, Sean Bean, Alan Cumming? Oh my word, Alan as Black Beauty just had me crying throughout.

To continue the military theme, Miss Potter was the stealth bomber of movies. I had no idea there was all that tragedy. Ewan McGregor! So touching! .

I didn't see Dumbo until I was an adult. I gleefully got rid of it.

Is the Velveteen Rabbit animated, narrated by Meryl Streep?

LOL!

Pixar's new movie Up has some surprisingly sad moments, and I mean heavy stuff - death, miscarriage, and a desperate old guy. It has a happy ending, but the first 15 minutes, wow. Brilliant movie though.

Um, Watership Down. The Lion King's pretty sad in the middle. And Little Women, well, it's Little Women!
