Your opinion on this knitters gift?

For the apprentice to my MW... she was working on some of my knitting projects while I was in labor, so I was thinking of getting her a knitting setup she could take to births with her.

A canvas bag (knitting themed)
a couple patterns for baby blankets that are the kind that you knit until you run out of either yarn or time
A few skeins of Lion Brand Homespun Yarn (this is from my stash)
A few skeins of baby yarn (also from my stash)
The needles she would need for the two patterns (she was admiring my Knitpicks Harmonies)

And then I was wondering if I should add some more yarns, so long as I'm placing a Knitpicks order... some cottons or some superwash wool (that I would dye).

So what do you think?

very thoughtful. I'm sure she will appreciate it.

I would see what types of yarns she likes to knit with first. That is highly personal- and lots of knitters are not overly fond of acrylics/non natural fiber yarns. It would suck to gift the yarn and it not be used.

I second the thought that gifting yarn is tricky. It's such a personal choice. That said, it sounds like a wonderful gift. I'm considering putting the Denise Interchangeable Knitting Needle Set on my wish list this year. That's a bit pricey ($50), but very, very useful to any knitter.

I can't think of any knitter that would not LOVE to receive a gift like that.

What a wonderful idea.

Thank you for the input ladies. After going through my stash and pulling yarn out for her I don't think I'll be buying anything new. The bag will be full already.

And for the ladies that were concerned about fiber content, the whole point is that she knits a blanket during labor and then gives it to the family... don't want to give her wool for that - I figure most new moms won't be able to keep track of the special care that would require.

what a beautiful and thoughtful gift!!! and if she doesn't like the yarn choices she is not obligated to use them. Many people like a nice acrylic :
