Anyone else remember when it was more fun and homey?

What are some of your favorites?

I haven't heard anything like this on there lately

My sisters and I loved this one.

Now the DVDs for the olds ones even say they are for adults.

I think that's bizarre about the DVD's. THey had some really good storylines - about life, growing up, multicultural... I loved the old Sesame. "We love you Mr. Hooper!!!!"

Now it's all squeaky little monsters, they've even changed some of the songs.

I read somewhere that they gave Snuffaluffagus a first name- maybe he always had one but they're using it now? He was always my fav. I remember and love old Sesame Street- but I do adore it's key values and appreciate that they've been able to make it relevant today.

I think that was one of the sweetest things I have ever seen .

My daughter watches Sesame Street now, but I really don't care for it. It's just not the same anymore. It seems sort of devoid of any meaningful subject matter and really just has no soul. I need to buy some of the DVDs of the old stuff.

Anyway, here's a classic Grover clip from when I was about my daughter's age. I love Grover .

I didn't watch a ton of TV but I did watch PBS when I was little. I loved Sesame Street. This song was my favorite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYXJlfcfFKU Now, listening as an adult I love the message so much more! I like the line "I've got one daddy, I've got two" How's that for acceptance!!

I also love this clip (I have a little girl crush on Madeline Kahn- I think she was so cool!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsCOTsE4atQ

And these are some that I don't remember from childhood but I found on youtube awhile ago and they've become family favorites here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALFKIWKQK9A Buffy Sainte-Marie on Mouth Bow singing Cripple Creek

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M2v-pkSIQY Johnny Cash and Biff singing Five Feet High and Rising

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1dlWmrRstc Paul Simon singing Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard (The kid in this clip is HILARIOUS!)

Happy birthday sesame Street

I think Jim Henson was a big part of what made the show great. Now I can not stand it!

I love Grover!

I loved the one where Buffy was nursing her baby. I miss the old Sesame Street I remember, sans Elmo. But I loved "Furry Monsters feeling Glad....." that was on a few years back.

A friend of mine was telling me about one of the producers talking at her school/college about 15 years ago. One of the students asked why Snuffluvgis was not invisible anymore. She said they changed it because they didnt want Big Bird to appear not telling the truth or no one believing him. They thought that kids might see that no one believed Big Bird, so why would any grown ups believe them if they had something to tell them that was secret. But I agree with the switch.

Good to know. I always wondered why they changed that. I will to admit to feeling a bit outraged and hostile when I first heard about Snuffy not being invisible anymore . I have issues with change . I still don't like it, but at least they had good intentions.

I also felt the way you did all the way up until my friend told me about the switch! So for about 25 years!

I didn't remember him being invisible either. I found the clip though, and it says 1985, so that explains why I wouldn't remember it.

i really loved that show when i was little. and, one thing on snuffy - he wasn't invisible, he just always seemed to wander off right before any other characters came around so that the other characters didn't believe Big Bird that Snuffy was real.

about them being marked for adults -

what i had read was that there is an episode where an elderly couple move in to the neighborhood and the man invites a bunch of kids in for milk and cookies. it's all very innocent in the original, but it's (clearly) not a good idea to have kids see a tv program that teaches them it's ok to go into a stranger's house by themselves.

that would explain it..
so, to be clear.. was snuffy invisible to everyone, audience included, or just the adults on the show?

the karate kid was in that clip! i had a huge crush on him. (but not in 1985- i was 2..)

ETA: thanks for explaining that Catubodua!

True, but that's the way I always thought of him as a kid since Big Bird was the only one that ever saw him. I thought he was kind of magical.

it's funny now, but i sort of remember being annoyed at Snuffy when i was little. i always felt like it was his fault that Big Bird got picked on a bit for having an imaginary friend - like, why doesn't he stick around for everyone else?!
