the DL on gluten in spices

okay guys---we are gluten free and I'm wondering if my spices could have gluten---they WOULD list it on the label right?!?!!!! (I've only seen one thing of garlic salt at my mom's that had gluten in it on the label) however people talk like it's more common than that (I've probably been killing us secretly with spices and gluten?!!)---I'vejust been getting spice islands and the other organic more expensive kind (can't remember right now) what's the deal and what do I need to figure out deeper in my spices?

If your spices are all relatively new, wheat would have to be listed if it's an ingredients. Gluten's not required to be listed in the US yet.

I have only seen wheat listed for some spice blends and for asafoetida. I buy an asafoetida which is blended with rice starch, instead.

Now, if you see folks commonly listing "spices" generically, it's probably referring to home-baked goods being contaminated. See, when one cooks with flour, it aerosolizes (poofs up) and hangs in the air for a few hours before slowly settling down to dust over everything. So if you're mixing up cookies with wheat flour and have an open jar of cinnamon and one of nutmeg, those two spices will be contaminated, along with every other surface (open drawers, open cabinets, counters, etc) in the kitchen.
