Vacationing and Cloth Diapering

I am hoping some of you can help me make a decision here. I am going on a trip to Mexico at the end of December for 5 days. I will be flying and staying at an all-inclusive. My problem is what to do about diapering.

My babe is 19 months and I have cloth diapered her from the beginning, so we have a decent stash but not enough to cover the whole 5 days. I tried G-diapers at one point in the very beginning, but had blow-outs and wasn't happy with them.

A part of me is just thinking that I should just bring some soap and wash the diapers the best I can in the tub and air dry. Has anyone else done this? I guess I am most concerned with bringing back the dirty diapers, even if I do have a decent wet bag.

So...is this doable, or should I give G-diapers (or the equivalent) another try. I really don't like the idea of using disposables.

PS. I have camped and cloth diapered (and just washed and hung) and that worked fine. But...this is a little different. And....I don't think they have a laundry service that would be interested in washing my diapers for me, plus who knows what kind of soap they would use, etc.

If it were me, I'd use sposies in that case. I would really not want to bring dirty dipes on the plane, and depending on the airline, you may have to pay for all the bags you check. But with sposies, you *would* have to worry about blowouts, which can happen at inopportune moments.

I think one of the new CottonBabies diapers has disposable liners that can go in it. I think it's called the Flip. That could be an option. Similar idea to g-diapers, but the fit is different so you may not have the blowouts of the g-dipes.

Or flats and covers. Those would be pretty easy to wash, and would dry quickly, and you could probably get away with it pretty cheap. And if you do find that they have a laundry service, you wouldn't have to worry about buildup from the soap that they use. (though you might not want it on dc's skin).
What is your current stash? If you have pockets and mf inserts, I'd think those wouldn't be too bad to wash and quick to dry as well.

How old was your DD when you used the g-diapers? Maybe she wouldn't have "blow outs" now.

I don't have any other advice because we use sposies when we travel. But some Targets carry a natural brand that is really great and doesn't lead to rashes like regular sposies.

(Sorry for not being more helpful, I know you would prefer to not use sposies.)

personally I'd have both. I'd do sposies on the plane/airport maybe days when your going to be sight seeing all day (I personally don't like hauling around a diaper bag filled with CDs ) and have a dozen or so cloth for the rest of the time. I've hand washed CD in hotels plenty of times not a huge issues at all. (though I'd make sure the water there can handle handwashing that wont be in boiled water). At the same time I think sposies can have there place and for me airports and all day outting in forigen lands qualify.

BTW if blow outs and sposies are a big concern but you do choose the sposies route include a few simple diapeer covers they should contain what a sposie can't and can be easily hand washed.

Most resorts like that will have a laundry room. Run a load with a bloop of bleach or vinegar or something to cut any fabric softener if youre worried about that, just wash and then air dry on your balcony if you can (Ive had more issue with softener building up in dryers than washers). I'd call and see whats available or if theres a laundromat nearby. I take cloth on my week-2 week trips out of town and even if I have to go elsewhere to do diapers, but my son really hates paper pants (well, so do I LOL) so that dictates it a bit.. but its no big deal

We travel a lot, often to foreign countries. I use disposables on the plane, and if we are leaving when Baby is still asleep, I put him in a sposie the night before. Once we are at the destination, I use cloth dipes the whole time. For me, the big issue is putting Baby in a sposie to go to bed -- it just doesn't seem comfortable! The reason I use the sposies at all is that I have very limited space in my travel carry-on, and I don't like it to be full of dirties. Really, to be honest, I think it is more about me than my child. He would prolly be okay with sposies. Don't feel guilty if you use them. I think that travel is a great reason to use them.

I agree that you should not feel guilty about using disposable diapers. Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do. Especially on a plane.

However, have you tried Gro Baby? They have biodegradable inner soakers. So, you could just toss those and still have the cloth outer. That might work.

Otherwise, you could call the resort and figure out their laundry situation. I am not a huge fan of doing laundry while staying at a hotel (have no problem with it in a vacation condo, though) but that could be an option. Also, where are you going? There are Walmart all throughout the big resort cities in Mexico. You could pick up anything you need there.

I've tried g-diapers on a couple of trips, and they've always been a mess! Every poop is a blowout (side note: hate the g-diaper, wish some of the covers weren't so cute and lured me in). We end up using disposables while traveling. It's just ME that hates sposies, baby seems totally fine in them!

That's interesting. My SIL did g-diapers for a while. Her son was always having poop blow-outs. We thought it was because he was a newborn and his legs were really really skinny. She passed the diapers on to me but I never used them because I was already doing pre-folds and thirsties. I'm so glad I missed out on the blow-outs.

Thanks everyone for you comments. As much as it PAINS me to use disposables, I think I am going to get some for this trip. I still may bring some of my cloth though.

Now....what kind of disposables are eco-friendly? I know Seventh Generation are chlorine-free, but is there anything that is more biodegradable and safe for the tushies.

We always use our cloth even when traveling. It seems that everywhere we have been I can do a quick load sometime. We have tried sposies once when traveling. We were very unhappy with them. Good luck!

I've never used 7th Gen but I know the Nature Baby Care are plastic-free.

They run really small though; I'd get the next size up from whatever your LO 'should' take based on the weight range on the box.
