let's talk kid music!

I think I am ready to enter the world of kid music but I am not talking Disney CDs here! I need stuff that we can all listen to and not want to pull our hair out. Plus I just want it to be kinda mellow and good.....I don't know what else to say, but I bet somebody will know what I'm talking about!

My dds birthday is at the end of the month and I want to surprise her with a few cds to go with the rest of her presents!

i've only heard a few songs, but they sound like something mellow and not annoying that the whole family could get into.

This was my favorite kids CD when the girls were younger. Now that they're older, they just listen to whatever I'm listening to (no more "kiddie" music here anymore).

We like Lunch Money a bunch (Going to the library, to see my librarian. . .). That's my DD's current favorite that I like also. We also like Dan Zanes, Ralph's World (M-o-m-m-y needs c-o-f-f-e-e), and Laurie Berkner. And They Might Be Giants.

Keep an eye on Kids' Corner, a program run out of WXPN in Philadelphia. I love love love their stuff, and they keep up to date on all the new artists as well. You can also get them streaming from the website.

Our faves are They Might Be Giants, look them up on youtube, there's tons of songs there. And the Deedle Deedle Dees, they rock...I need to see if they have another CD out. Another one I really liked but the kids didn't get totally into was Lisa Loab, it was more mellow and we're not much for mellow around here.

Oh and the Beatles are always a favorite. Not kiddie at all but my dd learned opposites from "Hello, Goodbye". (That counts right?)

I'm totally going to check out the others mentioned, we love non-kiddie kids' music and could use an update!

I had no idea Kimya Dawson had a kids' CD! We love her...going to look at that right now!

We love the Beatles here, DD's favorite's are Yellow Submarine, Obladi Oblada (instrumental), Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Help!.

perhaps not what you are looking for but I adore Laurie Berker as does DH and DS We listen to it constantly in the car and while I do get a little tired of it, the songs are nice and it's really catchy (not mellow though). We have some other music for DS but he almost always wants to hear her songs.

Another vote for They Might be Giants. I LOVE Here Come the ABCs and I don't even have kids (but yes, I have been exposed to it for hours on end and I still like it). The 123's and Science CDs/DVDs are cool too.

Is there anyone who doesn't do kids music. I am really not interested in it and would just as soon have DD listen to our music. I remember when I was little and would hang out with my cousins that their mom would only let them listen to kids music and even then I hated it!

I try to stay away from it. One reason I suggested Kids' Corner was because they play a lot of "real" music - TMBG, the Beatles, fun old stuff like "Monster Mash" and "The Addams' Family" and "Ghostbusters" along with the kids stuff.

My DS (17mo) loves punk music and Elton John. It's really cute to watch him headbang whenever the Ramones comes on or run to the piano and start banging on it whenever Elton John starts playing.

Yup they are awesome, in fact they will be DS's first concert this weekend cause I love them but they happen to do kids stuff too. "No!!" is my favorite kids album, well before we had DS.

Right now though DS prefers punk and industrial haha!
