Pool rental/cleaning, is this worth it?

Sorry for another birthing pool question! I love water as a pain relief technique--I spent as much of my labor with dd1 in the shower at the hospital as I could--but I don't foresee myself wanting to actually PUSH in the tub, though I won't rule it out completely until I see how it feels!

We know someone who rents out a La Bassine pool with all the hosing and a filter (I can't recall what else, but pretty much everything we need) for $50. To dh, the idea of having to clean out a pool afterward was enough for him to say we should just buy the fishy one and throw it out afterward, but once I realized I don't feel I'll want to deliver in it, just labor there, I was thinking it seems like clean-up wouldn't be an issue for the rented one anyway. And we could buy a liner anyway. I just think spending $20 or $30 on the fishy tub, plus needing to buy a hose, would cost us as much as the pool rental anyway for a less awesome pool that's going to be thrown out!

This is probably an easy question, but what would you choose? How hard IS clean-up for a pool if I did deliver in it, with or without a liner? I meant to ask my midwife last night at my appointment but I forgot to put it on my list. Dh is just creeped out by the idea of scrubbing....uh, stuff....out of the pool, and feels like he's not going to want to spend time on it anyway instead of with us. I need some real life experiences to share with him!

This is strictly my opinion...

I had my first DS in the water in our large bathtub (garden tub). It was very good for pain relief, although I think the shower was better.

With our next DS, we had a teeny tiny tub, and I didn't want to go for an aqua doula, which is what our midwife has even though it was free. What? Am I a crazy lady? No, I just didn't want to deal with possible leaks/messes and also the water getting cold b/c it is not a regular bathtub.

I had younger DS on the bed, which was ok. I would have preferred water, but only if we had the big bathtub.

I guess it depends on how long your labors are. Mine are on the very short side.

We've moved again and have a big tub. In fact, it is such a water waster that we have a three person minimum to use it. Well, me and the two kids -- I am making it sound like a hot tub! Seriously, though, I am excited about using it for birth.

Thanks for your input! Our regular bathtub isn't very big and definitely not terribly comfortable, so I feel like I'd like *something* as a tub option, though I suspect the shower will definitely be used as well.

I loved the la bassine. We rented it (gave birth in it) and it was so comfy and spacious. Our liner leaked so DH had to do the clean up and it really was not a big deal. And in the interest of full disclosure, and a little tmi , I did have a tear and their was lots of "birth-gunk" in it, but it all seemed relatively straight fwd and not a hassle at all to clean.

I used the shower a lot in al my land births and then the shower and the tub and the tub was so cool in terms of my comfort and the "lightness" it gave to my movements when I changed positions.

I have only used the la bassine so I can not vouch for the fishy pool, but I absolutely recommend it and it sounds like a bargain rental price. We bought our own hose, just a nice thick, clear hose from home depot and that we did just throw away as as the water drained, it got lined with all that afore mentioned birth gunk! Probably could of cleaned it, but really it was not a great expense so we just tossed it!

If you use a custom fit liner ($25 plus shipping if it's not included with the pool), cleanup is minimal. You just pump the water out and throw the liner away. You can also use a plain piece of plastic, like a 9x12 painter's drop cloth, but it is bulky and may leak.

For that price I would use it and then consider getting a liner.
