what cueing sound do you use for poop for an infant?

I am planning to EC my first baby, arriving this winter, right from newborn stage. I have read a couple of good books about it. It seems pretty clear to use "pssss" for the peeing cue. but both books only suggested " a modified grunting noise" for the pooping cue.
DH and I have been trying to figure out what to use but haven't yet. What are some good sounds? To me grunting sounds a little like growling which to me connotes a negative punitive emotion. So I am looking for somehting more neutral.

Also- regarding baby signs- for those of you who also use a sign to teach them pee or poop communication, do you use the same sign for both or different for pee and poop, and also what sign do you use and where can I learn it?
Thanks!

Congratulations!!!! I used the same cue for pee and poop, and it worked out well! I used the ss-ss-ss- sound.

Hi Katie,

We just use actual words with my 6-month old. We chose tinkle for pee and pootie for poop, so that they would sound different. We started at 7 weeks with the pssss sound, but real language quickly took over. We don't really cue much anymore - the whole process of undressing and going to the potty seat is enough that he knows what to do. We do talk about why he's there and tell him what he did every time.

The other day, we had our first successful pottytunity at a public restroom. I held him over the toilet and said, "it's OK to go tinkle now - go ahead and tinkle," and he did! The only normal thing was that he was undressed, but the position and location were all totally different. So I think the words were enough.

We started using the ASL sign for toilet, but we haven't used it in a long time.

I'm still a Newbie but I'm whistling for both pee and poop. Course I haven't caught a poop yet, but we're working on it

We make a "swswswsw" whistle sound for pee and have a funny thing for poop - we grunt and say, "push your poopy out" in a middle eastern accent with a concentrated furrowed brow look on our faces. DS takes pooping very seriously so it suits the moment and isn't scary. The saying comes from our midwife who is Iranian and our memories of her saying "Jesseeeca, pooosh your baby out" in this very deep, strongly accented voice while I was giving birth. I love that memory and can't wait to tell her how it lives on!

We just use psssssss for both poo and pee and he just does his business, whatever it may be. He's 3 mo. I've just started signing (same sign for both) though I know it will be quite away before he can sign back.
