Talk to me about cervical length in multiple pregnancies

Hi mamas!

I am currently 31 weeks with twins. Last week I had some contractions (turns out they were mostly braxton hicks), so they did an ultrasound this week to determine my cervix level (haven't had any contractions since ).

Anyway, my cervix length was measuring 2cms today. This is down from 4cms at my 26 week ultrasound.

Think I should be worried? I can't find any info about cervical length in twin pregnancies.

Anyone have a cervical length measurement to compare this to?

Generally, the cut off is around 2.5 cm. But at 31 weeks I think you're doing pretty well.

I'm at 0.5 cm and am on strict bed rest (currently in the hospital for PTL) at 26 weeks.

I have no clue. It was never measured. I just wanted to give both you and Zevy some

I can't remember my exact numbers but I know that my cervix length was quite long for many of my ultrasounds. At around 31-32 weeks I had some regular contractions and was in the hospital for 3 days to be monitored. During that time I did have an internal exam by the OB and was told the cervix length was only about 1cm and I was 2cm dilated. The contractions stopped and I went on to carry my twins (taking it very easy) until 1 day shy of 37 weeks.

Thank you for this!

My midwife doesn't seem too concerned right now. She said that I am carrying 8lbs of baby already and that I am a second time mama, so she does expect some shortening. We will keep an eye on it though.

37 weeks.....I CAN MAKE IT!!

http://ic.hobh.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=15 Try this forum for short cervix issues. I have short cervix but not with multiples but there are alot of mamas on that forum with experience

I don't really know whether it's the length at any particular time or the contractions+shortening that is more of a concern. Did they say if you were funnelling at all?

FWIW, my cervical length at about 26 weeks was 3.5 cm, and suddenly at 27 I had a run of PTL and was down to 1.3 cm and funnelling, and I went straight to L&D, where my cervix said that's all folks and started dilating (they managed to keep me pregnant for 2 more weeks). Not sure how helpful that is, but you asked for measurements. I hope you can hold out a good while longer!

Wow, I actually wrote some of this down (um, that was before I had twins )

26 weeks - 4 cm
33 weeks - 3.3 cm

I had an u/s done at 36 weeks but they stop measuring the cervix at that point I guess because they aren't as concerned about PTL. I gave birth at 37 weeks + 1 day. I did have a ton of bh contrax particularly around 24 weeks that frightened me enough to be assessed in the L&D (um, that and I had just read Dr. Luke's book which I think freaked me out a bit). Of course, all was fine, but it was very reassuring to be checked out nonetheless.

By 31 weeks I was getting LOTS of rest and letting dh do pretty much everything. It's worth it to take it easy and if anything doesn't feel right I wouldn't hesitate to go see your care provider.

Wishing you all the best in these last several weeks - they can be the toughest!

No there was no funnelling at all. No dilation either (per a vaginal exam). The round of contractions I had lasted for about 3-4 hours. They were fairly light but coming at regular intervals which was enough to have me question them. I haven't had any since. The fetal fibronectin test came back negative.

Thanks for providing your info!!

I've never even had mine measured. Wish I could help you with a comparison since we are due the same week.
