Funny Sourdough Story

Okay, so I'm making the 3rd batch of bread with this particular starter. I'm doing the test pre-Thanksgiving. I'm in charge of sweets and baked goods. YAY!!! They get TF food!!!!! I inherited a glass loaf pan with a lovely domed lid. I am covering the bread to rise for 12 or so hours and I think what a lovely thing it would be to just use the glass cover on the glass loaf pan instead of wrapping it in a towel. So, I do. About 5 hours in, I'm cooking supper in the kitchen and all of a sudden, the lid to that pan shoots off the top, flies up into the air and then off the top of the refrigerator and crashes into the floor. Fortunately, nothing was broken... and it didn't hit anyone. I just love how TF sourdough is a living breathing entity with a life all its own. Yum! Especially when you knead it and it fights back.

Whoa what was in that bread?
Great story!

It's alive!!!

It's definitely alive. I bet there was some kind of gas build up since the lid offered no ventilation? In the bread book I have it specifies to store the dough in a container that can breathe, though to be fair it says nothing about letting it breathe during rising...

WOW! It would be neat to do it again and set a video camera to catch it flying!

elleystar - I'd be afraid my lid would break if I let it happen again, but that would be cool

I use the NT recipe for starter and sourdough. It is really really good for us. It tastes so cheesy and yummy. It is full of the good stuff for sure.

As soon as you mentioned a glass lid on rising dough I suspected that would happen!

I cover mine with a cloth napkin- it keeps the bugs and dust off the dough without causing explosions!

Yeah, usually I do to, except this time I had this cool glass lid, and all I could think of was that it is so cool and I should use it. I didn't even think twice about reproducing bacteria giving off wonderful gasses or anything that was going on in my wonderful bread. hehe It is the coolest glass lid.
