Quick question about carbs/breads.

I have started really eating alot more fat and being really TF. However I am now edging up on 6 weeks preggers and all I want to eat for breakfast are hubbys homemade egg mcmuffins. The thought of anything else makes my stomach woozy. Even just the seperate pieces seperate. which is a slice of home cooked ham, slice of chedder, overmedium egg on english muffin. I am resisting for all I am worth because I am not sure how bad the carbs from the bread will be.
Do you guys think its awful? Or do you think eating it as a whole wheat english muffin will help??? I don't eat any other grainy carbs during the day (generally) but I am just so confused!
Thank you so much!!!

TF is NOT grain/bread/carb free. Some folks choose to do that as well (often following more paleo diets) but *many* don't. (Just read anything by WAPF--lots of grainy stuff there!) Most proponents of TF will say to use soaked/sprouted grain products, which you can make at home, but I also think you can buy sprouted english muffins made by food for life if it's too difficult right now. (Not positive on that though.) And we each need to do what works for us in the moment--if you can't make or buy the soaked or sprouted kind right now, you just do what you can!

I currently choose to be grain free and love it, but I also felt a huge difference when just eating soaked/sprouted (non-gluten) grains. I say just do what you can--and don't sweat it. Awareness is huge and the changes that need to happen will come w/ time. AND, homemade is MUCH better than getting it from McDonald's--it's awesome you guys are doing that!

ETA: Here is the sprouted english muffin link: http://www.organicdirect.com/food-li...oz-p-2559.html My local grocery store has these in the freezer section (of the organic area).

And here is a low carb, grain free 'egg mcmuffin' recipe in case you're interested: http://healthyindulgences.blogspot.c...egg%20mcmuffin

Thanks Fairyrae! I have not ever "sprouted" anything and don't really "get it" yet. I do know that without all the grains I feel so much better though! I guess thats where I am flumoxed over what to do. I am so excited about the sprouted english muffins...do they taste any good? I have heard that the ezekial bread is pretty...umm...different.
I am off to look at those pages you posted now..thank you!

It sounds like you're craving a combination of whole, natural foods. While pregnant, I would focus on eating whole, natural foods, and making sure you get enough. I wouldn't restrict grains while pregnant unless you had a medical reason to do so. "I feel better with fewer grains in my diet" isn't really IMO reason enough to completely eliminate them while pg.

Having carbs with lots of fat and protein mitigates many of the problems with carbs- the way they can be digested quickly and then cause blood sugar to spike, then drop. A homemade egg sandwich has enough fat and protein to lead to steady blood sugar levels after eating it, and fills you up enough so you're not going to gorge on bread, bread, and more bread.

I think there is a reason that we crave more carbs in the beginning of pregnancy. I would just do what your body needs.

My grocery store sells the sprouted english muffins, too. Maybe try those if it will make you feel better about eating it every day -- but really, that is a healthy breakfast; carbs and all

ITA with this. It sounds like you are getting a nice balanced breadfast of protein, fat, and carbs. So much better than writing in that you're craving Frosted Flakes!

You may really enjoy reading Real Food for Mother and Baby by Nina Planck if you're new to the TF thing. She's more whole foods than necessarily TF, but I think her advice is pretty solid.

I woke up this morning wanting coco puffs....thank god I still have enough will power to not go buy some!

I agree that it IS something about carbs and early pregnancy...maybe its comfort food or maybe its something with the nutrients.
It is nice to know that the protein/fat will help negate the sugar spike from the carbs...I had a huge problem with low blood sugar last pregnancy (eating a sad diet) and I am trying to avoid it this time!
For those of you who have eaten the sprouted grain muffins...are they like normal ones???

I never did try the sprouted English muffins. I remember while pregnant buying the Rudi's organic spelt flour English muffins several times, though.

My health food store had them in the freezer. Was nice because I could just pull out one when I wanted it and leave the rest frozen so they'd keep. They didn't bother me like your average refined white flour type would. And they were GOOOOOOOD!!
