Thoughts on this?? My son's pediatrician has been administering Prevnar wrong

So, they are suppose to shake it and they don't. I verified this. I talked to the manufacture to verify plus, it's on their product sheet. I talked to the CDC to verify. I talked to 2 nurses at the pediatrician's, one said that they don't shake it, the other said that it's suppose to be shook. I also talked to 2 Dr's there. The one that normally gives the shot said it doesn't need to be shook, (I happend to see a totally different dr that I have never seen before, this person gave him the shot and didn't shake it either) Now, the last Dr I talked to said he would look into it.

All in all, in the end, the last Dr I talked to said that they will do a titer test to see if there are anitbodies in my son's blood at the 1 year visit.

I asked him will this cause harm since chemicals interact with each other and since it wasn't shaken maybe it will cause a problem? His reply: I don't think so.

I am just PISSED off. This was this 3rd shot of prevnar, all for what?? Nothing except getting the basic side effects, fussy, crying...

I am just really mad. I don't even want to vax him anymore.

I can't switch pediatricians. This place is close and the next nearest one is 30 minutes away.

I would stop vaxing if that is what you really want to do .

Yeah, stop vaxing if that is what you want. And my guess would be that your pediatrician's office isn't the only place that is making that same mistake. Medical errors are common.

Oh, I am sure you're right. And what's really disturbing to me, is that I know more on how vax should be administered than the actual office. I find that really sad and upsetting. Who knows what else misinformation, diagnosis, mistakes...ect they make.

Why does it need shaken, is it a multi-dose vial or do the single dose prevnar need shaken for some reason, if so can you share why?

I know for the multi-dose vials they are all supposed to be shaken to distribute contents equally since they hold enough for 10 people and its possible one person gets more of the preservatives (mercury for instance) than others...

I wasn't aware of the single dose vials needing shaken, and wanted to learn more. Maybe some do, and if so, I'd like to know which ones.

I got the information here plus, I called the manufacturer to get verification:

http://www.wyeth.com/content/showlabeling.asp?id=134

Here is a quote from the manufacturer:

"Since this product is a suspension containing an aluminum adjuvant, shake vigorously immediately prior to use to obtain a uniform suspension"

It also says that it will turn white in color when shaken.

The link will go to the full dose and administration information. If it doesn't come up, go to prevnar.com, click on prescribing information on the left side of the screen. Click continue, then a pdf file will come up. on the left side of the screen, it will have options, click dosage and administration.

I don't know what other single vial vax's need to be shaken. I just looked up this particular one. Reason why, is I wanted to know more about this vaccine, which I ended up finding that it needs to be shakened at the same time and I know my pediatrician doesn't shake it.

If you are unhappy with your pediatrician for this or any reason, you can always use a family doctor for your child's care.

I wonder if the Daptacel (DTaP) vaccine is the same way? I tried to check here, but it seems the link is broken. anyone have the DTaP manufacturer insert link?

ETA: I managed to find it by clicking on the link for Hib vaccine

https://www.vaccineshoppe.com/image....pe=product_pdf

It too needs shaken (I cannot remember seeing anyone shaking it, nor did I realize this- even though I had read the paper insert- and mine had all 3 in the series as an infant) ... not sure if they shook it while I was looking away, whether I was too absorbed with my baby to notice (likely) or if they forgot too.

I'm still confused the reason for the shaking... what happens if its not shaken? Is shaking it supposed to increase effectiveness of vaccine or lower side effects or why ??
