working with beeswax?

I have just started making my own body care products and I have a huge chunk of beeswax that is difficult to work with. I am scared I am going to chop my hand off when I cut pieces from it. Does anybody have any secrets?

I've only worked with beeswax a little but I used a screwdriver near the edge of the chunk and tapped it with a hammer to break off a piece.

I just use a cheese grater. It works great, and is safer than screwdrivers, knives, hack saws or axes.
