Anyone else suffer from Keratosis Pilaris?

For as long as I can remember I have had this. It gets worse in the winter months. Better in the summer especially if my back has been exposed to the sun or if I have been in a pool. Mine is itchy (at least the patch on my back is).

Have you found anything to help this?

yep, I have it, my regimen is to wash with a prescription wash of 10% benzoyl peroxide, then to wipe my body all over afterwards with a product called kerol redi-cloths again a prescription item. The work if I use them regularly, but after having a hard time recently and not caring for myself well, I've had a huge break out :-(.

Yes, I was trying Amlactin but not consistently to see results and stopped when I got PG. It's spread to my belly and thighs and I find using this bath mitt helpful. I might try harder with the Amlactin after I deliver because it gets so yucky in winter without the sun.

i find that getting enough vitamin A and D and using a good lotion as soon as i get out of the shower really really helps.

Vitamin A and D has helped me as well. No prescription creams were effective for me.

It mostly on my upper arms and back. Its my back that itches alot.

Periodically my husband will take the Clinique body scrub to my back. I swear sometimes I just want him to get out his sand paper.

I have this...on my arms not my back. Now that I have started eating a lot more fat in my diet it is helping a ton! I take a fishoil and that seems too help as well. I also never use the same wash cloth in the shower twice. and then I put on alba unscented lotion and that seems to really help!
Good luck!

I 'cured' mine recently. Good moisturisers help but I've never found the right one and I've tried hundreds. all permutations of AHA, BHA, urea etc with no luck. I'd see some improvement but it was always still there and waiting to come back.

Then I had a patient with very scaly feet (VERY!) who had an unopened tub of foot cream that I slapped on her feet for her and skimmed the ingredients list to see what was in it. I'm always on the look out for a cure. Next day her feet were amazingly 99% improved.

I searched online for the cream...mind you, it's for feet and it's smelly in an old lady perfumed way but I got some, braved the smell and tried it. Putting a little on every second day and my skin is virtually perfect.

I can't guarantee it'll work for everyone, KP does seem to a individual thing as far as treatment.

What was the cream I hear you all ask? Well if you send me a check for $25 I'll tell you...

K, only joking

It was THIS. Sounds like an odd treatment, smells odd but a miracle cure for me!

Anything that exfoliates will help - alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids, or manual exfoliation.

Personally, I find using salicylic acid pads (acne pads) convenient to use - clearasil or noxzema. (Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid.) And, when I'm in the shower, I use a body scrub mitt.

Others here have mentioned some alpha hydroxy products (Amlactin, Foot Smart cream). They will work too.

old kp thread discusses supplementing vit A and fish oil to correct this.

Supplementing with Vitamin A and fish oil helps mine.

Vitamins A&D help me but oddly enough I found that my biggest trigger is allergens. It's the same for my DD. Her allergist kept saying her KP was unrelated, but it *almost* goes away when she doesn't have dairy. So you might just confirm that you're not having any allergies.

My DH's goes away in the summer months as well, with sun exposure.
It goes away in summer because warm air holds more moisture. It's not an issue of sun exposure.

I found dry brushing with a soft, natural bristle wood-handled brush (Ayurveda style) before each shower works amazingly well. Soft, circular strokes or long, gentle strokes (depending on body part) always working toward the heart is the method I use.

Pardon the waking of the thread!

I know this is an older thread but I too suffer from KP. I just had my second child in May and my KP just exploded!!! It's NEVER been this bad. I've always known that nuts definately trigger it, and whenever I've had too much dairy. Well I've completely omitted dairy and nuts but it's really no better. I've read somewhere else that it could be also related to a wheat allergy which I haven't even begun to tackle to see if that's the fact with me. I feel like I look like a leper, and you all who have it knows how it feels to have friends and family peering at your arms and than ask, "what's wrong with your arms!!??" Yea like that makes me feel any better! HUGE problem is that I am IN my best friends wedding the beginning of August THIS YEAR and I do not want to be in front of everyone feeling like I look like I've got some kind of communicable disease! I'm also nursing so I'm hesistant to use anything a doctor might prescribe. So any updates on promising products?? It seems like one of the few products that were out there that showed any real promise was taken off the market about a year ago before I was even able to try it! PLEASE HELP -- I'M STARTING TO FEEL PRETTY DESPERATE!

have you tried vitamin A? not enough A is frequently a cause of a flare up. i would also think of acupuncture... which can help tremendously with balancing the liver after pregnancy. when the liver is stressed the skin is affected.

also use a strong moisterizer after you shower. one with fruit acids is best. (like for the bottom of your feet)

Watching this thread--

In my experience sun exposure helps--vitamin D

Haven't tried a specific creme--but will consider now...

Vitamin D/sun exposure and virgin coconut oil/vegetable glycerin as moisturizer are working for me. I'm also taking a flaxseed oil supplement, don't know if that's helping as well. Also, as others have mentioned, exfoliation is key! (Sometimes I use baking soda as a scrub in the shower, then put a few drops of glycerin on my skin while still wet. Feels great, and the redness is definitely going away.)
