Cleaning winter woolens

Thread Starter
We just got some new merino wool long johns. They are so great! My kids say how cozy and warm they are.

They are bit long in the sleeves and with the ribbing at the end, they don't really stay folded. So some of the sleeves (wrist area) have stains (dirt, sauce etc). How do I get the stains out? I don't think I can use Tide on wool, can I? I don't have any on hand but I'll get some if it will work.

I tried Kookaburra wool wash---did not take the dirt or sauce stains out. Any other suggestions?

winter woolens

Funny that this was posted today because I have had my winter woolens in a pile to be washed when I got wool wash. My MIL was here for the day helping while I was sick and she threw them in with the rest of the laundry And, well, they are fine and the stains are out! She didn't use Tide though--Country Save. Whew.

I've had really good success with Charlie's Soap. I mix it up in the sink, and soak the woolies in that. If the stains are really bad I might do this twice. Then I wash again in Eucalan.

I soak mine in eucalan sometimes for a couple days, then I use a wool wash bar abd scrub, scrub, scrub. That method has gotten every stain out so far. With some of my natural colored woolies we will sometimes soak in a bit of oxi-clean. hth!

ooo great thread! Ours are pretty grungy

I use gal soap from nova

Wet the woolies, washt he stains with the soap and then leave some on to soak in, then wash in wool wash.

Works really well for dirt and ok for other stains

Glad I found this...thank you "advanced search".

As I pull out our woolies, well hey...some of them are pretty ick looking. I hope I can revive them some. Good to know about the oxygen bleach.

So yesterday I got busy with getting our woolies cleaned up. I soaked them in oxo-brite (eco-safe version of oxy-clean) for an hour. Then got busy with some diaper stain soap I had never used and remember was safe for wool covers.

WOW is all I can say. Our woolies are beautiful now. Almost new looking. Minus the small Stockmar yellow paint stain they are free of stains (and if anyone has tips on removing this yellow stain, I'd love to hear them).

I really wish I had taken a before and after photo. Thanks gals for all of the advise!
