arthritis in teen?

Hello, wondering if anyone may have experience with arthritis in kids/teens?

We think our 14yo DD may have some sort of arthritis. Symptoms started about 6mo ago in her hands, spreading to elbows, shoulders. She was referred to a Vascular surgeon first by the Ped. then we saw a neurologist, who said it was possably neuropathy (sp?), did blood tests, MRI, all showed nothing. We took her to a Neuropathy specialist, who says she does NOT have neuropathy.

Now, it suddenly it has spread to pretty much ALL of her joints, hips, knees, and even her jaw. In almost all the joints they "click" or "crack" when she moves them. We're seeing a Rheumatologist this monday finally.
By searching her symptoms online, it sounds to us like she may have osteoarthritis. Here's what we found;

Osteoarthritis - Symptoms

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:

* Pain, commonly in the hands, hips, knees, or feet, and sometimes in the spine. Pain usually is related to activity of the joint and is worse at the end of the day or after periods of activity. As the disease progresses, pain is present even during rest.
* Stiffness (lasting less than 1 hour) after periods of inactivity, such as in the morning after a night's sleep or after sitting for a long time.
* Limited joint motion.
* Tenderness and occasional swelling.

* Joint deformity (usually in later stages of osteoarthritis).
* Joint cracking or "creaking" (crepitus), often accompanied by pain. This creaking also may occur in a normal (nonarthritic) joint and is usually painless.
************************************************** *******
She's been out of school for a week now because her hips and knees hurt so bad.

Has anyone had any similar experiences with something like this? Advise, ideas?

Thanks so much,
Ayn

I'm not sure...I'll have to check into that. thx

Just goggled Fifth Disease...it doesn't really sound like that fits, but I don't know?

I realized I forgot to mention in OP that she hasn't had any swelling or rashes at all. Fevers either, until the other night, it was about 99.1. But she has had tiredness, and a "feeling" like she has a fever(and doesn't), and like she's "going to get sick" she says. Even her ribs are hurting her, and her back. The other night (Fri) she was feeling short of breath, and said "it hurts when she breaths" so we took her to the ER. They did a chest X-Ray., found nothing, and said, "Good luck at the Rheumatologist!" grrr

It could be that or another virus. I had something this summer that started the same way, in my fingers and then my toes. Then it spread to my knees, hips, back, shoulders, elbows, etc. It's gone away and come back now since June. Is she in constant pain or does it come and go?

I hope you can get some answers on Monday. I bet this is very frustrating for her and you.

I can't comment on the possibilities of what your DD has, but I can say that my cousin (mid 20's) has had full body arthritis since he was a teen, so it is possible.
I hope ya'll figure it out soon. It can be quite difficult to live in constant pain.

I hope you get a diagnosis for your daughter soon. I am NO expert, but the reason it doesn't sound like OA is the relatively rapid onset and spread. Has anyone considered Lyme disease in your conversations? Please keep us posted if you can!

I had arthritis much like your daughter. It started at age 8, went into remission, then came back with a vengeance at age 16. It got so bad at times that I couldn't walk, use my hands... or open my jaw.

I was tested for everything. Lyme's, lupus, rheumatoid factor, etc. I had elevated sedimentation rates, but the rest was inconclusive. Was treated unsuccessfully for years, until I was put on the anti-malarial drug, plaquenil. And the terrible swelling went away.

The only major flare-ups I've had since then have been during pregnancy... which makes sense since I believe my arthritis was immuno-based. Acupuncture helped greatly.

The other thing I should mention is that now when I have minor flare-ups, I take selenium, thanks to Hilary Butler mentioning it on MDC. And it helps immediately.

Not sure if any of this will help, but I feel for your daughter. Good luck.

My first thought was Lyme as well.

I'm not sure which Monday you were talking about. Did you get to see the rheumatologist? Any answers?

There's a simple blood test for the arthritis.

My dd is 16 and had had JRA most of her life... flare ups off and on. Hot tub helps. Electric blanket helps. Tylenol helps. Physical therapy can also help.

Thanks everyone for your reply's, I haven't been online for a couple days and came to post about the appt.

The Dr. said she has Hyper-Flexibility syndrome, (which runs in our family) and that in turn caused her to have Muscular Skeletal Pain Syndrome - Just like Fibro she said ( has all of the Fibro tender points), but she says its NOT Fibro (she can "outgrow" it). She says that with physical therapy she can build up the strength in her muscles that will support her joints better, then she wont be in so much pain. I hope this is true and she doesn't in fact have fibro...

It seems to make sense. My son had/has really bad pain in his ankles, and wrists. He was tested, and tested, for everything. They finally said it was just due to the genetic condition he has with Hyper-tonia (sp?), and growing pains. This last year our new ped. diagnosed the Hyper-flexibility. I guess we didn't think of it with our daughter because our sons is really extreme, think "pretzel boy"!

She's suppose to start PT as soon as the ins. co. approves it, and we are seeing a TMJ specialist next week. She's on a lot of pain, and has been out of school for almost two weeks. SHe's asking me to homeschool her. I'm wondering if that may actually make things worse though, because I'm afraid she'll gert less exercise, which would actually make it worse.

For those of you with teens that have Fibro- what works for them? How do you/they manage it?

Thanks again, everyone for all of the feedback

Homeschooling might be a good idea, to give her a chance to build up her strength and reduce her pain. I imagine that she has to carry lots of stuff during her school day, which adds more stress to her joints. Good Luck with the PT.

Believe she will "outgrow" the joints problem. What do you think about starting yoga or any stretching exercises. It usually takes a year and a half (my experience) to strenght the muscles/ joints.  Also know that  natural stuff like Nature Medic Arthritis Cream might be helpful. It contains turmeric, fenugreek and other herbs. Use crem externally.
