How lond did it take for your stitches to dissolve?

Thread Starter
I posted a few days ago about my tear still being pretty painful 3+ months pp. I appreciate all the helpful responses, but now another question

When I'm doing my perineal massage, I can feel lots of tiny bumps which I can only assume are the sutures, right? I mean, they are right along the lines of the tears....could this be another issue that is contributing to the pain? I know based on others experiences that silver nitrate helps with painful scar tissue (which I have), would this also resolve the suture issue too? Thanks!

My stitches dissolved or fell out by 3-4 weeks pp both times. Have you had them checked to make sure they weren't infected or retained? Oh, and I have bumps too I figure its just scar tissue. It will settle after awhile. :

I think sometime around 2 weeks postpartum I was itching like crazy and went digging (quite painfully) around where I'd had a few stitches and managed to pull out a few rogue pieces that had hung around. Once that was done I felt much better. I'd check or have someone (DH?) check for you to see what you can see/feel.

mine dissolved pretty quickly - 2 to 3 weeks I think.

grab a mirror and take a peek. It could be scar tissue or it could be what the others have mentioned. You won't know for sure till you look and have your CP take a look.

I only had a few after the birth of my oldest thankfully, but I remember my midwife trying to yank (!!) a few stitches out at my 2 week post partum visit. And they weren't yet ready to come out. I was sore for a few days afterward...her pulling on them was the worst part of having them by far.

I hope you get some relief.

Thanks for your post

I am having this same issue 5 weeks post-partum with one of my labial tear stitches - they ought to have dissolved by now but one of them is still tender and aches a bit.

I took a look with a mirror and the suture material had kind of aggregated in one of the folds just inside the vagina and it is very tender and possibly infected. I am getting it looked at on Monday.

I believe 7 or 8 weeks.

It took weeks. DH saw them in there and I was still bleeding so I made an appointment 8 weeks pp. The tear healed fine but there were like polyps (like small flesh bumps on the scar) which had to be burned away with silver nitrate. i was given no option, otherwise with research would have chosen laser burning instead of the silver stuff. It doesn't hurt, it is uncomfy. It was way better afterwards.

nia82 - sounds like you had granulated tissue.
