Have You Purchased an EReader...

...primarily for homeschooling?

I'm coming around to seeing the point of ereaders. I've been resistant, because I use the library a lot and when I buy books, I tend to buy them for under a buck at the thrift store. However, the clutter issue is winning me over. I mean, you can fit like 1000 books on the kindle, right? I have around 400 books in my little house, and our shelves are pretty much stuffed to the gills.

Plus, DH and I are both talking about going back to school in the not too distant future, and I think ereaders for textbooks are just a perfect solution- textbooks are expensive, heavy, get outdated quickly, and get lugged around a lot.

This got me thinking about ereaders for homeschooling purposes. Are there good ebooks for homeschooling out there? I saw the "100 Free Ebooks" thread, and that's very cool, but I'm wondering about more specific, curricula type stuff for somewhat younger kids, say around 10-12.

Thanks!

i don't know if the books would be too young, but we enjoy bookflix, tumble books, etc. there are other free book sites as well, but again, i'm not sure about the age range of 10-12. perhaps google books would be worth checking out? they have full-preview free books. also, ambleside has great books too ("paddle by the sea" specifically comes to mind..& i'm sure they're tons more). hth.

I have a Sony Reader and use it primarily for homeschooling. We use a lot of Ambleside Online suggestions, which are almost all public domain books. Sony has an agreement with Google, which makes it incredibly easy for me to download books.

I don't know about curriculum specific items, though. We haven't explored that yet.

ETA~ I just looked at REAL Science Odyssey, which is one of the things we plan to use next year, because I knew it had an e-book option. It comes in PDF format, which is one of the formats my e-reader uses, so I may choose that option. Then I can just print out the student lab pages we need. Thanks for the idea!

My son is only a preschooler, so we haven't used it for homeschooling but DH and I both have Kindles from Amazon and love them! One of the things we like is that you can have up to 5 Kindles on the same account which means we can both read the same book at the same time for no additional charge. I think this would be great to use in starting a family book club!

I have no idea. At the time I bought my Sony Reader I liked what it offered more than what the Kindle offered, but those were the only two I looked at and I honestly can't remember all of the details that led me to choose the Sony. Sorry I'm not much help!
