I know that it's not ideal as far as the whole animal product thing goes... but I'm interested in hearing thoughts about the properties of leather furniture - like, depending on the quality of the leather and treatments used, can it be a healthy alternative to cloth upholstered furniture?

I can't find much about the aniline dye used to color/preserve it - I do know that there was a law suit a while back due to some leather coming out of China that was causing problems, but this hopefully was an isolated incident.

What about the surface treatments - are they more than a harmless wax? It would creep me out thinking that my skin is absorbing some weird carcinogen every time I sit down...

But I really like the fact that it's a natural, breatheable material... it sort of encapsulates all of the nasties that can develop in the cushions themselves and off-gas over time/ become airborne, etc.

Any thoughts???
