Is it a typical British school or are they in some sort of special program with small classes, fish pond, and assemblies with all of 50 kids.?

I'm pretty sure it is a fictional school made up for television...

Aren't they still in preschool?

see that's just it, tv schools are generally a lot like regular schools except with extra nice or mean teachers, whereas the c&l school seems like it's really small.

so I was wondering if it's actually typical, or if it's supposed to be a special sort

I posted here because I was hoping it'd stand out as a particular style.

no, lola's def. in kindergarten and charlie's at least 8 probably 10 or 11 years old

I googled it. Charlie is 7, so equivalent to a US 1st grader or maybe a end of year red-shirted kindergartener. Lola is 4, so preschool, or just entering kindergarten.

I'm not sure when UK kids move up to regular school from preschool. 50 kids is pretty normal for a local preschool.

At 4 years old, it is not unusual for a child in the UK to be at "big" school. They would be in Reception which is the equivalent of pre-k. So it is quite possible for a 4 year old and a 7 year old to be in the same school. At 7 Charlie would be in Year 2. Year 1 would equal kindergarten in the US.

At 4 they are in full time school in UK, the village school Ds went to, has a preschool half days for age 3 Then full time reception class for age 4.
Ds's class had reception and year 1 in one room, (sort of like a k/1 class) there were only 12 kids in the whole room and about 60 kids in the whole school that went up to age 11ish when they then went on to high school. (here they had about 500 kids total)
They didn't have a pond, but had a big grass playing area and a big wooden play structure, that was all.

Nooo, Lola is four or five.(I think Lauren Child said five for the television show.) She goes to the Big School and she's totally losing her teeth.

I was going to say it's the British equivalent of the school Little Bill attends. Inner city school with awesome equipment and a class size of 8.

so it is a normal sort of school then. Is it also normal to start learning clarinet at age 6?

Charlie seems rather advanced for a 7 year old...

I find it funny that their school doesn't have uniforms, I always thought that most if not all British schools had uniforms. I also think Charlie seems older than 7, closer to 9 or 10.

We love Charlie and Lola, we like dancing to the theme song. We bought DD Charlie and Lola books and they're great!

it's normal to start learning an instrument, yes. i started violin & piano at 4, my brother started piano at 4 & oboe at 6. although i think musical services have been squeezed since then.

In scotland you begin nursery at 2 or 3 (you have to pay to send a 2yo, 3yo's are mainly funded by the government) then "big" school the August after the February 28th you're 4 (so my DD, who turns 4 in April, will be nearly 5.5 when she goes to big school). In fact legally you don't have be "in educaton" until you're 6 in Scotland.

My DD's prospective primary school (in a big Scottish city) has 400ish pupils, and a big outdoor area with plants, wooden play equipment and a small nature area with a covered pond. It's in a v. affluent area, but it's a normal state school.

7 is a 1st grader or even kindergarten? Seriously? My daughter just turned 7 on the 9th of November and she is in 2nd grade.

I want DD to go to Sid the Science Kid's preschool. 4 kids in a class, and a teacher who can turn absolutely anything into a valuable learning experience? With song and dance, no less? Sign us up!

I figured Sid and friends were TAG and/or SN. (the one doesn't preclude the other, it's just a question of what the school district decided to label their class.)
