Baby stomach troubles/colic- this is what is working for us

Cormac has been gassy and uncomfortable, with nightly screaming attacks that would sometimes last for hours. And his pooping frquency had slowed way down, from several times a day, to once a day, and then to every 3 days. I know to some extent that's normal, but he was suddenly having a hard time getting it out. He grunted and strained a lot. Instead of large and mustardy, some of them were coming out tiny and formed! They were still soft, but the shape of my little finger.

In googling around for some kind of solution, I came across a bunch of articles about this: Using probiotics, specifically Lactobacillus reuteri.

I went ahead and bought the same product they used in the study, BioGaia drops, because I didn't want to take a chance with a possibly inferior product. I feel like I'm never sure if I'm getting what the product says with supplements and vitamins... I got them from behind the pharmacy counter at WalMart because they have to be refrigerated (I called the company that makes the drops and they looked up a local place for me to buy them). They were expensive at $38.

But the results have been worth it! He's been on the drops (5 drops, once a day) for 6 days now, and the difference after day 3 has been striking. He doesn't scream at night anymore. He has pooped more often and they are only mustardy now, NO formed poops! It's been so easy for him to poop now that I have actually missed his cues (we EC) and he pooped in his diaper twice. He's just happier all around- he smiles at me and is so calm all day.

The last 3 nights he has slept like a LOG, too. He's sleeping 4-5 hours at a stretch. I am a believer! I just thought someone else might want to know about this and try it too!

i will keep this in mind because we're having similar problems here, minus the formed poops (his are violently explosive unstead). me cutting dairy helped a lot, no more screaming for hours, but he's still not quite normal. i was just looking at probiotics at the store, didn't buy any because they all had lactose in them. i need to find lactose-free. will be trying the health foods store.

How do you give him the drops?

The little bottle has a plastic insert on the top, so you just turn it over and the drops form and drip out. It's in sunflower oil, and doesn't taste bad at all. He actually seems to like it. I turn it over and put one drop on my finger, then touch that to his tongue so he knows it's coming. Then he will either open his mouth, or I pull down his bottom jaw slightly, and just drip it in. It just takes a couple of seconds.

Samantha- yeah, you might not be able to use these then, because it does say "may contain traces of milk protein".

eta: I guess that makes sense though, because it's Lactobacillus. They digest the lactose and make lactic acid.

This is a dumb question, but I have my probiotic, now how do I get the drops out? I feel really stupid.

Pandme- it's not stupid, I didn't know either when I looked at it! It was not intuitively obvious to the casual observer, as my father used to say.

Somewhere on the insert or the box, I read that taking off the white cap and turning the bottle upside down would cause drops to come out of the little plastic dealie. Sometimes I have to touch my finger to the opening to get it started, I don't know why. Then they come out quickly.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you get it working.

I finally found the instructions, and you just tip it over and wait. LOL, I wasn't waiting, that was my problem. Anyway, they came out just fine! I put 5 drops on a spoon and gave it to her that way. I'm hoping it will reduce her gassiness soon!

I'm using a spoon, too, but might try to see if I can drip it directly into his mouth. It seems that the spoon is still coated with oil when I'm done.

I've been rolling the bottle between my palms, like you do with nail polish -- like you're trying to warm your hands up. That makes the drops come out easier for me.

I don't know that I've noticed much difference yet. I think he's spitting up less, which could mean that the probiotics are helping with his indigestion problems. I started them on Thursday, so this is day 4.

Just over a week ago, he finally started sleeping in the co-sleeper! He was fidgeting and kicking me in bed SO much one night that I just moved him over to the co-sleeper so that I could have a few kick-free minutes. I expected him to complain, but instead he fell right to sleep! He started sleeping at night really well after that. So, I was hoping that the probiotics would help him with daytime sleep, since nighttime sleep had resolved itself. So far there hasn't been much change in the daytime. He still has trouble sleeping and still gets pretty cranky sometimes.

Yeah, no real difference here either. She is very gassy as I'm typing this. Had a great daytime sleeping day the day we started, but still gassy.

I agree with you about the spoon, but I cannot conceive of her ever holding still enough for me to get these directly in her mouth. I can't even imagine how I would do that!

I can't imagine getting past his wall of gums! He does NOT open up his gums for anything, even nursing (ouch)!

Keep on with it, I know the study checked for results after a week. I guess the bacteria need a few days to colonize the gut and do their good work. I hope it works for y'all too! I've just been so happy with the reduction in Cormac's crying. He still gets gas, but he'll just cry about it for a minute, then stop instead of an hour straight of screaming. And his sleeping continues to be really good.

Thank you!! I had similar troubles with my first, I didn't understand what was going on until it had almost resolved itself (that it was colic, not just what babies are like).
I'm due with #2 in three months and I've been dreading the possibilities of another colicy infant.

I just found a detailed explanation of the study and i think it's very helpful and encouraging.

The small articles I had previously read made me think the assessment at 1 week was when they saw the really dramatic results, but it looks like there was improvement at a week (which we definitely saw too), and continued improvement all the way up to the final assessment at 28 days.

We are having a bad night of crying here, out of the ordinary for him at this point. He's clearly tired but can't sleep, so I was googling about his drops and found the full study. I hope it's encouraging to y'all, too.
