Hi there

I hope this is the right place to post this question. We are having ds's 3rd b-party soon and I cannot come up with any good food ideas. It will be in the late afternoon, early eveing so I want it to be something substantial and maybe something a little fun. We did a cold cut/cheese plate last year. Any ideas??? tia

We've done a "make your own taco or burrito" dinner for birthday parties, and that works out really well if you don't mind eating leftovers for several days!

Make your pizza is always a hit with kids! Salad bar works well for adults...

Tacos work really well for a group.

One birthday party, I made chili (my 3 year old's favorite food, and it was his party). We had lots of toppings/chips/crackers to go along with it. It was lunch-time, so it worked perfectly. To stretch it more, I could have served baked potatoes and/or hot dogs with it. But, for our party, bowls of chili worked.

For lots of parties, we end up grilling. My dh loves this, because he always likes an excuse to go outside and go away from everyone for a moment. Our last party was grilled hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers, with cheese and toppings, a big veggie platter, hummus, and black bean and corn salad.

Around here, pizza is very popular for kiddie parties, as is just very basic kid food (turkey finger sandwiches, pb&j, carrots and ranch, chex mix).

Another fun, but potentially messy (depending on how many kids/what your seating arrangements are) meal would be spaghetti or baked ziti.

For our kids parties, we've ordered from favorite restaurants, if we could afford it. Some big hits were- dim sum, enchiladas & chile relleno, sushi, Greek (falafel, dolmas, hummus & pita, tabouli) and Indian (pakoras, samosas, biryani, and mango lassi). Much less expensive, but a lot more work, have been simple spreads I prepared myself. These might be- everything to make tacos/burritos/nachos, or sandwiches. Spaghetti, cooked veggies, green salad, and bread. Vegetarian chick nuggets, french fries (frozen, cooked in oven), pigs-in-a-blanket (sausage wrapped/baked in biscut dough),raw veggies, dips. Chili or beans, cornbread, garnishes (cheese, chopped onions, etc).
