Swaddling Blankets ?

I've gone through 10 pages of posts (first visit to this forum!) - I apologize if there's been a discussion on this lately...

With DD, we swaddled using flannel blankets when she slept in her cradle. DH is a good swaddler but I, frankly, suck at it.

I'm considering whether I should buy one of those swaddling contraptions with the velcro to up my chances of this little one staying swaddled for a decent amount of time. But they're not cheap, especially if I buy organic, so wanted to get some opinions on them first.

Anyone use and like them?

I haver one of the kiddopotamus ones. My son will be 12 weeks on tuesdfay and we just started using it a couple of weeks ago. We never really swaddled him in the beginning. However, my husband tried it one night and he slept in his co-sleeper for almost six hours straight. He had never done that before because he would always wake himself up with his arms within an hour. So, he had only ever slept in the bed with us. Once he wakes up, I usually take it off of him and bring him into the bed. This has been our routine for almost two weeks now. I wish we had used them from the start, but it just seemed to hot to swaddle him.

I also love these muslin blankets for swaddling and everything else.

For us, those velcro things were such a waste of money...

I like the miracle blanket - but my dd eventually would kick her legs out - the top bit is very warm, but then her legs would get cold.

It's AWESOME. So easy and my most recent lo slept so well with it. IMO, even better than the miracle blanket (I also felt like the fabric at the top of the MB was getting in her face too much). Plus - how cute are they!!!!

A friend picked up a couple of the kiddopotamus ones for us at a yard sale. They were really helpful in the first two weeks when we were just too tired and frazzled to wrap the baby up some nights.

He outgrew them really quickly, though. Like... by week 4 he wouldn't fit in them anymore. He's just way too long.

DD1 slept in the Kidpotomus SwaddleMe until like a year. We were extended swaddlers, she really needed it to keep her arms under control.

DD2 never needed to be swaddled, really.

So you may want to just hold off and see if the baby likes to be swaddled before buying a special blanket.

We are big fans of the Miracle Blanket.

I made a blanket just like the Miracle Blanket. IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ARM FLAPS!!! The rest of it really doesn't matter, you could pretty much just sew arm flaps on any blanket and the baby's arms will stay put! It works so much better than a regular blanket, I use mine every day.

The Woombie looks cool too. However, I'm pretty sure I could just sew the arms off of a sleeper sack and make the same thing for much less $$...

Will the miracle blanket or woobie really fit a 21 pound 4 month old? Any experience here?

DS wore his Miracle Blanket until he was 16 months old. I don't know how much he weighed then, but he's a 50th percentile kiddo for weight. So yeah, it'll fit. With an older kiddo, edging toward a year old, the blanket might be too short. At 10 months, we cut holes for DS's legs.

He was a serious swaddling addict.

We never swaddled our daughter but our son seems to need it to sleep at night. We use the kiddopotamus swaddleme and it is awesome. They also make a large size for bigger babies, so I already purchased one for when he outgrows the one we use now. LOL!

I think swaddling blankets with velcro or stuff like that are worth a try but I'd try to find one used so you don't have to be out a lot of $ if they don't work for you. I went through 3-4 before I found one that worked for us....

I think based on this, I'll wait till the baby's here - DH can swaddle with a regular blanket for the first little while until we see whether this is something this babe needs. If so, there's some great recos here for good products! The Kiddopotamus one is the one I see most up here, but I'm not averse to shelling out if it seems like it's going to get some use!

We had a couple of the cheap SwaddleMe blankets when our son was first born and those worked fine, but the Miracle Blanket has been one of the best baby investments for us. It's three times the price as the Kiddo SwaddleMe blankets, but at eight months (20+lbs and 30") the Miracle Blanket still fits our boy comfortably! He grew out of the large sized SwaddleMe months ago. So if I could do things over again, I'd get two Miracle Blankets.

DS has to be swaddled to sleep. Regular receiving blankets worked for about three weeks. On a whim, we bought a Miracle Blanket and it has been wonderful. We love it and it was worth every. single. penny. I bought a neutral-colored one off of Amazon.

If you have friends with kids, ask around. Someone might have one you could try out before committing.

I had one of these too. Most of the time I only did it under his arm pits because he hated having his arms confined.

Another vote for the Miracle Blanket.

DD is almost 7 months, about 19 pounds. She's too long for it, so I just leave her legs out and swaddle her arms. Works like a charm. She doesn't sleep for long stretches, but even when she needs to be nursed in the middle of the night, she pretty much stays asleep. When she's not swaddled, she just ends up trying to rub her eyes and keeps herself up.

Another vote for the kiddopotamus. LOVE that thing. I think the Woombie looks so uncomfortable and hot. I like that the swaddleme has like vents and her arms and legs aren't all smushed together getting sweaty.
