Patterns for capes and other dress up things?

Both my girls have been drooling over these capes in one of the catalogs that came in the mail last month and I wanted to make them but for the life of me I can't find the catalog or remember who it was from. They have lots of cool natural toys and they cost a fortune. The pictures are usually hand drawn but this issue actually had photo's for the 1st time. Anyone know what I'm talking about? If not, they were 2 layered royalty type capes with hoods. I wanted to make 2 out of what I have on hand but unless I have for dummies type directions I'm clueless when it comes to sewing.

Found them!

They want those capes, so how do I make them?

The links aren't working.

I could probably sit down with you and teach you how to make a simple cape without a pattern, but I'm horrible at explaining these things with just words. I'd need to SHOW you how, not just tell you how.

Try looking for "free cape pattern" and see if you can find simple instructions that somebody's taken the time to put onto a web page. Or, try searching for patterns for purchase.

OK, I was able to find the photo by going to www.magiccabin.com and then searching for "cape". I don't think those are two layer capes- it looks to me like one layer of material, with a second (the white fuzzy stuff) sewn around the edges. You could probably take a rectangular blanket (or similar shaped piece of fabric), fold it over and drape it over somebody's head to figure out where the hood should be. Then sew some elastic where the hood needs to be (or maybe bunch it up and sew something non-stretchy to hold the hood in place, maybe ribbon?), and put on some kind of fastener around the neck.

The length of the fabric should be your child's height plus a foot (or just your child's height if you don't want it to drag on the ground) and about as wide as your child's arms stretched out, fingertip to fingertip. Sew around the edge with "blanket binding".

I would go with a semi circle cape like this one

If you knit there are some nice felted crown patterns on ravelry which might go nicely with a cloak.

It's really easy to make a cape out of play silks. You can get silks at Dharma Trading, then dye them. The Habotai scarves are perfect and inexpensive. For little ones, I'd use 22x22", and for bigger kids, the 35" squares.

You can leave the 2 layers separate and just sew 2 parallel lines along one side, several inches down from the edge, then thread a coordinating ribbon through the casing. Then the short end can fold back so you seen the inner color on the outside.

For a different look, you can sew along the edges, turn and topstitch, and fold down one end to make a casing.

I just used this tutorial for a halloween costume and it worked out well.
