Twenty minutes??? Definitely not.

I didn't read/hear THAT anywhere. I just swished it around for a minute or two, I'd guess. My goal was not "oil pulling" since I had never read nor heard of it before last night. My goal was to get a good coat of oil around my mouth (after caring for my skin). Then, I'd go read and relax for awhile. It'd be at least an hour before I would brush my teeth or drink/eat, though. And sometimes, I would actually brush my teeth first (forgetting about the coconut oil) and then squirt the coconut oil in my mouth (and care for my skin), swish, and leave it all night.

ETA: I just read an entire article on oil pulling and I should revise my statement above slightly. I was doing a minor version of oil pulling NOT the full-on process. Nevertheless, the coconut oil DID resolve a gum issue I had for over a year (nearly two years, to be more accurate). After reading the article, I am going to give the real process a shot for a few days just to see how it will affect my allergies/sinus issues this time of year. Right this minute, I have an icky sinus headache that is in the very early stages where I can feel my sinuses filling up with gunk and pressure building in specific areas of my head. I'm off to "swish" with oil for 15-20 minutes. Interesting idea, eh?
Another ETA: Oh My! I put just under a tablespoon of organic virgin coconut oil in my mouth and swished away to normally soothing music. I lasted 3 minutes and had to spit most of it out. My mouth was foaming as the coconut oil volume increased exponentially with my saliva. I continued swishing for another minute when I needed to start clearing major amounts of phlegm out. I'm still expelling gunk. My eyes are expelling fluid; my sinuses are draining; my head still hurts; I'm still coughing up phlegm. I'm going to revise my plan!

The 1-2 minutes never did all this, but I was also using a lot less VCO. I've read a few different ways of handling this, so I'm going to post in the Health forum for more info.
