The canned stuff is awfully good if spread thinly on an open-face toasted cheddar sandwich, I gotta say. I've heard that complete degenerates may butter the bread, then put on the cranberries, and only then add the cheese prior to toasting on the rack in a fast oven.

My Cranberry Relish

Fresh ginger, peeled and diced very fine (maybe a 1/4 teaspon total)
1 orange, peeled and quartered
Juice from 1 orange ( I freeze the rest of the mushed orange for cranberry orange bread, which I make after thanksgiving)
1 bag cranberries

Cook the above ingredients with a bit of honey until well infused with flavor (leave out the quartered orange).

I blender the simmered cranberry mixture, then add the oranges and chill. Sometimes I add a bit of cinnamon and cloves.

I have made this so often, I no longer have a recipe.

Yes, this. I don't actually eat much cranberry with my t-day dinner but I have to have it with the sandwiches the next day!

LOL I love watching the train wreck that is the Kwanzaa cake. For those that haven't seen it here's a link. In case you can't tell those "acorns" are corn nuts. I can not imagine putting that in my mouth.

I have to admit, I saw the fried cranberry sauce and I'd try it.

I love cranberries in all their incarnations. I make home made sauce and love it, but always wind up with some of the can shaped jelly on my plate too.

Aeress - I'm totally making that relish this Thanksgiving! Thank you for the recipe!

I grew up thinking I hated cranberry sauce, which is funny because I love the cranberries themselves. The first time I had homemade cranberry sauce was a revelation. I love the good stuff, just not the quivery can-shaped jelly.

I've never tried canned cranberry sauce but it seems icky to me. My (ext) family does this pineapple and jello cranberry sauce every thanksgiving and christmas that's ok, but DH, DS, and I like just cranberries boiled with just a little sugar added.

I absolutely will not eat the stuff from a can. When I was a kid, that's all I was ever exposed to, and I always thought it was gross. I didn't have freshly made cranberry sauce until I was in high school, and fell in LOVE with it!

I make mine with orange juice and brandy. It always gets eaten, though not everyone eats it. I'd say about half the guests eat it.

I like homemade. Canned is ok but only if it's the "whole berry" kind. I guess I'm a meanie, we hosted thanksgiving dinner this year and had homemade sauce, so our guests had no choice. They did seem to like it though.

I think adding extra sugar is a good idea in case folks find it too tart.

Thanks for all the interesting recipe links... I'm in charge of cran sauce this year, I think I'll try something new.

i make my own. dh doesn't eat cranberry, and DS has never experienced canned so I get all the say.

It'll be interesting if after a few thanksgiving meals and such with family members (he's only 18 months) if he'll have a preference and we'll start to have both.

i find the canned stuff good for a quick fix. but it's not that same as homemade. (obviously)

We have both on our table at Thanksgiving.

We'll have the canned kind, homemade relish (just cranberries, sugar, and wter), cranberry jello salad (yum!), and sometimes, we have another cranberry dish. Just depends. But, we always have the main 3.
