Play Fishing Set- how to?

I was thinking about making a fishing set for an almost five year old boy. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how they make the "hook" and how they make the "hook" catch the "fish"?

I'm planning on knitting the fish, then using a dowel rod (?) for the pole. So I was questioning whether to use a magnet set or velcro? Or if you had any other ideas...?

I used a magnet for mine. I'd think that Velcro probably wouldn't catch easily enough, and when it did, it might start to tear up the yarn.

I'm making one for ds. I'm making the fish out of felt stuffing and then attatching magnets. Then the rods are out of dowl with a magnet at the end.

I'm also sewing up a large blue bag that opens up and is the water for all the fish

Hook/loop (velcro) may be easiest. I'd put the hook side on the end of your fishing line so the fish don't get all stuck to each other, and use something other than wool to knit with so the hook can't grab the fish anywhere on the body.

I had in mind using magnets, but I'm not sure how you'd attach them to knitting. If your fish are 2 layers, you could put a magnet between the layers.

You could put a loop somewhere on the fish, and the line could have a hook. That would be more challenging for a 5-yr old.

Do you have knitting patterns? I was thinking about making fish out of wood, but that means dragging out my scroll saw.

you can put the magnet inside the knit fish. Sounds like such a cute idea

If you use magnets, you only need one magnet, for the fishing pole hook. Then use metal washers for the fish mouths. You can sew it on, or seal it inside if the fabric/knitting isn't too thick.

I was just going to knit the fish from a pattern I saw on Ravelry. I'm fortunate that I won't need to have it done until "Christmas in July." We're moving- so this is a project that I'll start this spring.

We used large paper clips on the fish and a strong magnet on the end of the fishing line for ours.

Those fish are awesome! I love that they are knitted in the round to minimize sewing (something I hate doing!)...must make my kiddos some fish!
