about what gauge would I get? I have this lovely soft alpaca yarn I want to make a hat for DH with, but I'm feeling lazy and don't want it to take forever.

Thanks!

Only one way to find out!

Make a swatch with the yarn doubled and the needles that you plan to use. Then you'll know your gauge!

it'll depend on the yarn you're using and the needles.

I figured that was going to be the answer. Are there any general guidelines though? Should I start with a needle twice as big as called for?

Hmm... I'd probably go up 2 or 3 sizes... less if it's pretty thin yarn (for sport weight) or I want a thick fabric, more if it is a thicker sport or I want a thinner/drapier (is that how you spell it? Drape-y-er wow, I need more sleep) fabric...

well- you will end up with a worsted weight- so a 7 or 8 to start with?
