Two sets of godparents - one for each child?

DH brought this up to me over the weekend. We're starting to think of who we would like to have as godparents for our little guy that is due in February. I just didn't realize that you had to have a set of godparents for each child. Is this true?

Interesting....

we usually have different god parents for each child. (These are not who the children would go to if something happened to us)

Right, these are not guardians. In my area the tradition is to have different godparents for each child; in fact, I have never heard of each family having the same set of godparents for everyone.

I've only heard of godparents being the same if the godparents were also the intended guardians. This DC will have different godparents than DD.

More important than godparents... do you have a legally binding will declaring guardians for your children? This is so important!

Do you mean like a living will? Absolutely! We had that done last summer. But will need to modify it when DS#2 is born.

A living will has more to do with your medical care should you become very ill.

It does not provide any guardianship for your children should you die. You need to have a last will and testament that names guardians. Talk to your lawyer right away about estate planning. I think in these economic times... it is more important than ever to have folks your child could depend on if you and your partner are struck down in an accident.

Hmmm.. I'm pretty sure the one that we had put together shows who will be guardians if something were to ever happen to us. We listed them in the order that we felt would be best - first our IL's (if still living), next my parents (if still living), next are the godparents and then our very last resort is a close friend of DH's.

Who would take care of your children in the event of your death would be found in your last will and testament not a living will.

As state before Godparents are not the same as a guardians.
