My baby is here!

After 20 hours of stop-and-start labor that wasn't going anywhere, things started picking up at around 10:30 p.m. and the baby was born at 3:45 a.m. It's a girl, 7 and a half pounds, 21 inches long. The homebirth went fine, my favorite midwife was there as well as another midwife I like. I pushed for about 25 minutes. I passed out the first time I got up to go to the bathroom. The baby latched fine on my left side (nursing side lying since I can't sit up) shortly after birth but has not been willing to nurse on the right since then. I'm exhausted. The hospital has better painkillers and you can press a button whenever you want and get help from someone with medical training who has theoretically been asleep at some point in the last 24 hours. On the other hand, at home there are fewer people messing with you and the ones who are messing with you are people you like and care about, so there's a balance.

aw, mama congratulations. your post sounds exhausted, but I couldn't help but chuckle at your comparison of home vs hospital.
I hope nursing gets easier. My babe rejected my left side for the first three days, so I know that can be frustrating.

This labor was as different from my previous labor as I can imagine.

This labor was paradoxical. I was shivering uncontrollably, but I was hot. I wanted the warmth and buoyancy of water, but I didn't want to get wet. I wanted to stand up during contractions to move the baby down, but I wanted to go limp. At the end, the intense urge to push her out was met by the equally intense urge to hold back as her head burned my perineum.

I recall from the other thread you said you were ready, so, yay!!! I am so happy it was labor and it finally got itself started!!

I fainted after getting up with my first son's birth, that was so not fun, and totally freaked my DH out! (probably more than me giving birth )
Hope you are feeling better now!

I bet babe will latch fine on both sides after a little practice and time. My first son also could take the left breast much easier than the right for about 2 weeks, I did a lot of pumping/hand expressing --after offering him that side over and over and with time, he got it figured out. (Though if you have a nursing toddler, they help so much with engorgement )

Take care, be easy on yourself--accept as much help as is offered.
I hope your babymoon is a nice time for you and yours

I'm so happy for you mama! I appreciate the realism re: homebirthing as I approach my own HB. Good to know it's not all sunshine and roses! Happy babymoon!

Congrats Mama! If it makes ya feel any better mine is refusing to nurse on my left breast.

Congratulations on your birth!! I'm sure you both will get the latch issue figured out soon. Enjoy the peace of being at home.

I had the same thing I was also afraid to tear so that held me back a little also! If I hadn't had that fear he would have been out in 2 pushes!

this labor was also way more intense than Ds1 and Ds1 was only a 45minute labor instead of 4 hours!

Congratulations mama how lucky to have the home birth!

A huge congrats!!!

And don't worry re: the hospital painkillers. At least around here, you don't get anything stronger than ibuprofen after the birth.

Enjoy your babymoon!
