Do you have a platform bed? Can you answer my questions please?

Thinking of getting DH to build a full size one for ds1 and ds2, I like that they are low to the ground.

Anyone build one?

Do I need to have a box spring as well as a mattress on top of the platform?

Where did you get yours? Not looking for anything fancy, just basic but quality that will last a long, long time.

Any tips I should know?

we built a simple platform bed by lying 2 x 6 boards on their side, making the outside frame like that and then putting 1 x 4s across the top. spacing them 2 - 3" apart for breathability. We then added short legs on each corner for height and air flow. Ours was a cal king so we actually built it in two pieces to make it easy to move around.

i do advise checking your lumber carefully as ours ended up being moldy and my hubby then had to sand and sand and finish with a non toxic wood finish....

Subbing as I'm interested in the same thing....

Do you need any sort of box spring then? Or are you just popping a mattress on the wood? Or a piece of plywood (would you feel the slats otherwise??)

I see some stuff online but nicer to get feedback/tips from people you "know"

Thanks talia rose for you how-to, sounds pretty simple and easy which is what we are looking for, oh and affordable!

I'm obviously not the expert but I am pretty sure you don't need a boxspring and that you don't want to just put a mattress on plywood. You need the slats to allow for airflow and movement of the mattress? I have looked at platform beds in stores/online and they all seem to have slats.

When I lived at home in high school I had a bed frame with slats, no boxspring but a really thick mattress, one of those double thick deep pocket mattresses pretty much as thick as a mattress and boxspring, and you could not feel the slats, but the mattress was super thick.

My best bet is to look at ones for sale in stores/online and try and copy them.

I used to have a platform bed---never a box spring or anything, and sometimes with a really cheap mattress. I bought one online and found one in a thrift store. I had a hard time finding one well-built, sturdy, and plain, but this is what I ended up with (not from this store tho) and liked it a lot--it was super easy to put up and take down for moving, etc.

the problem with plywood is it is filled with formaldehyde, so does not make for a healthy sleeping environment. and as i can only recomend organic mattresses as all others are toxic, you would not want that formaldehyde leaching into your chemical free mattress. if a person is using plywood, as we did when building my son a loft, we advise sealing it with AFM Safecoat Hardseal which forms a membrane sealing in toxins and preventing them from offgassing or leaching into your mattress.

any latex mattress is fine on a platform bed. most others will be fine as well, but depending on the brand, may invalidate the warranty. I took a pic of our frame this morning and will try to figure out how to post it.

Ohhhhhhhh!!!!! I can dooooooo this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you so much!

Ironically, I've been looking at mattresses on your website and only just now connected the dots. I love synchronicity. I will likely duck under a chair and not admit my MDC nickname when I call with questions on the mattresses (I kid).

Ohhhh I think I just found my child-is-with-her-dad weekend activity!!!!!!

we haven't made one, but we own slat beds (all of us have them) and they are just a mattress straight on the slats (an innersprung on ours (made for slat beds) and special slat-bed mattresses for the kids beds). They are much firmer than boxspring beds, but that's what we love about them. Slats are necessary to keep the airflow and allow moisture to evaporate from the mattress. We use the underfloor area to store the kids toys in nice baskets or wooden boxes (our duvet doesn't come down the sides of the bed, so it keeps things all nice and airy).

We have a discontinued West Elm platform bed. Ours is slatted and we use just a mattress alone on it. It's very sturdy and we love it. We had planned on building one originally (there are lots of great plans online) but we were able to buy ours on sale.

We built one for DS a few months ago. I think it took about 2 hourse start to finish. I will try to remember to take a pic after his nap.
It was SOOOO easy!
