NEW MOVIE: "Formula Fed America"! - Page 3

I watched this yesterday and have been thinking about it as well. this movie could potentially cover MANY topics, like the lack of maternity leave in the US, well unpaid maternity leave.

I also hope the cover the race/class issues, I hope they expose formula companies for the unethical UAviolations they are and I hope they acknowledge what and uphill battle it is for women to successfully breastfeed for almost any length of time. I would also personally love love LOVE for this movie to talk about women in the military and breastfeeding and being deployed from their infant children. I think if this was recognized as a dependent RELATIONSHIP maybe they wouldn't ship mothers out who had infant children. so I guess to me this comes down to what is valued, mothering or money? and yes I do know the answer but its sure UGLY!

and I do hope Katherine Dettwyler (whom I personally think is pretty cool, though RADICAL!) puts on a suit or something so they don't all look like hippies!

I found the mothers comments to be very judgmental. I also wish that the would choose medical professionals that appeared more, well, professional.

I'm sort of excited, but I could see it deterring some mothers or making those who were unable to due to health reasons feel even more guilty. I'm one of those mothers who had to stop breastfeeding due to health reasons and my son is healthy regardless of how skeptical people are about formula feeding. I do plan on giving my best and fullest shot with my next child, but if I can't breastfeed again I'm going to try my best not to feel bad about it. I still sometimes feel guilty for not breastfeeding as it is. But there's nothing I can do about it. My health problems really made it difficult and he was becoming very unhealthy from too little food.

Anyways, the part that had me raise my eyebrow was when the man said that breast milk has evolved over the centuries. I really don't believe that. It will be interesting, but I'm not so sure I'd pay to go see it. It does have that judgmental air to it and I felt like the mothers in the commercial judged other mothers for formula feeding. I honestly will say, I don't have an issue with those who choose to formula feed. But I do tell all my friends who have babies or want to have babies to really give breast feeding a shot because it is ideal, but it's a very personal choice and no one should be attacked for what they choose, especially when we don't know the story behind their choice.

I'm going to watch it, even though it's going to sting and make me cry and fear for the future health of my DD (I have to ff). I really hope that it focuses on how our society (namely, our sad maternity leave and lack of support of new mothers, such as no insurance coverage of lactation consultants) is the problem, rather than placing the blame on the perceived ignorance/disdain/vanity/inconvenience of a new mother.
That way, it might make people think more about the larger picture (how maternity leave and insurance policies that do not pay for lactation consultations, pumps, etc. affects the health and welfare of mothers and children) rather than looking at the individual (Ha ha, let's laugh at these women who would rather have perky boobs than a healthy child)/ While those particular women can't be helped, maternity leave policies in this country can be changed, so let's start somewhere!!! know what I mean?
Also, maybe even discuss how environmental pollutants may be affecting milk gland development in pubescent women (my particular issue)??????

Mm, I wasn't overly impressed with the trailer either. Mostly because I've been researching adipositivity recently, so the constant refrain of "obesity epidemic" kinda made me roll my eyes. But we'll see.

HOLY COW I AM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO EXITED...I think so many woman need to be educated about breastmilk vs formula. This film may help some woman who were going to formula to feed change their mind. I CANT WAIT!

I'm excited to see it as well!
I didn't get the idea that it would be bashing formula or the mothers who need to use it, just like I don't think BOBB bashed hospitals or the mothers who needed a c-section or induction for medical reasons.
I really hope it shows how hospital policies usually don't help a mother breastfeed, the lack of knowledgable support a new mother gets who wants to breastfeed and how much marketing and paying out the formula companies do to get women to fail at breastfeeding.
I really hope it doesn't talk about safety issues or recalls since really, ANYTHING and EVERYTHING has been recalled at some point and I think most people know that anything manufactured has a chance of being recalled.

i formula fed in the past but started out nursing. i was guiltless in switching because i was uneducated and coerced into thinking that formula was just as good as breastmilk. now that i've learned a thing or 12, i do not feel horrible for ff'ing my older children, but i do feel proud that i have made it to all breast feedings with a former NICU 35 wkr! eta: i also went 26.5 mo and clw with my 3 yr old, but not giving up this time (even after 1 success) was still difficult!

love the movie trailer and can not wait for the full version. i don't see how it's so wrong to point out that formula is not optimal nutrition for our babies. like i said, i'm okay with how things went for me and my children in the past and only i can let what others say bring me down. this isn't about tearing people down; it's about building them up so that they have the courage, strength and support to be successful breastfeeders!
