Generally I felt until there is no stitch definition. Also, have you seen the trick of drying/shaping it over a bowl you already have? I've read about hats being done on a form or ball/bowl as well.
Hope it turns out good. As I discovered while making oven mitts, it is a fine line. If you think you want it done a little more, best to hover over the washer. Oven mitts are my men's Christmas gift this year and one that I wanted just a *little* bit more felted barely fits my hand.
And my final tip - was it you making dryer balls? Anyway, throw a wool dryer ball or tennis ball - just one - in the washer and it will speed up the process.
