ant poison, fertilizer--help please!

So the condominium where we live uses ant poison and fertilizer on the grass where kids play. (Please don't scare me with how terrible this is--I know!) What I am wondering is if anyone has suggestions of alternatives for either of these.
Preferably something cheap and readily available in Brazil.

I assume the ants are fire ants? I've heard that diatomaceous earth will get rid of them, but I've never tried it myself. You can also use a pot of boiling water. However, all of these things (and probably including the ant poison) will only cause the ants to relocate.

Is the grass area a monoculture? I'm willing to bet that the fertilizer is a "weed and feed"--weed killer and fertilizer in one, so I doubt you'll find an organic alternative that would be satisfactory to everyone else.
