Calcium for me?

Hi Mammas,

My mom and her side of the family is laden with bone deficiency issue...as my 30th birthday draws nearer my mom has mentioned that I should be taking some form of a calcium supplement.
What do you think? If yes, what type?
I'm otherwise very healthy, non-smoker etc.

bone defiency how? I have osteopenia and the doctor thought it was more important for me to get Vitamin D than calcium (though she wanted me to have both). I get my calcium through bone broth and things like broccoli because every time I've tried to take Ca, I get very nauseous. And you want to temper it with some Mg too.

I would agree with the pp about vitamin D -- here is a brief article from Dr. Susan Brown (bone doc) about this: Vitamin D is more important than calcium and this one High calcium intake does not prevent bone fractures Good luck! I am just at the beginning of figuring this out, too.

There's an interesting book, The Calcium Lie, that may be of interest. The premise is that calcium isn't usually the big issue for people, it's all the other minerals that work with calcium, magnesium, boron, even zinc is involved in building bones. It doesn't discuss fat soluble vitamins like D and K2 which are important for building bones, plus obviously a lot of other stuff, but it's still quite interesting. The health problems that he lists as clustering together do cluster in my DH's family, and more magnesium seems to be a big deal for them.
