PF users- a couple of questions.

So I made the jump to cloth yesterday (was waiting until I felt 100% after delivery) and so last night was my first night in cloth as well. I'm using PFs and trying out various used covers. During the day I went with Bummis whisper wrap NB. It was pretty hard to pack all of the PF into it, so today I'm going with the Stacinator so simple- so far so good, much easier to deal with. Last night I used the Imse Vimse Bumpy wool cover and it worked FABULOUSLY. After a week and a half of leaky NB sposies, we had our first dry night , but not a single inch of that PF was dry! I used 1 doubler, tonight I think I'll add another. With the sposies I was changing them often because he demanded it, but last night he slept soundly, only 'waking' to nurse, so I didn't change it all night. Is it bad to go the whole night with a wet diaper? Thoughts?

Also, what do you do with the excess PF fabric in the front- do you fold it over inside or outside?

Congrats on a dry night!

I would fold the prefold over under the cover. The only time I have had leaking was whenthe prefold was not completely covered with the cover. The liquid is absorbed into the fabric, and if it's sticking out of the cover it will soak into DC pjs, your sheets, etc..

just my 2 cents

I fold it over inside for my boy... I figure that way that will get wet first and it will take longer to spread to the rest of the dipe. It also lifts some of the fabric off his crotch so he's not stewing in it.

It's only really a problem to leave him in it if he gets a rash from it. My guy does, so I change him once in the night and use a fleece lined dipe for night-time.

I don't change mine at night - no rashes....sometimes I use stay dry liner - sometimes I don't....
tuck excess inside the cover...for dh I fold down the back before i snappi.....

I don't love the idea of leaving DD in a wet diaper through the night, so we always use wool covers at night because it's breathable. So far, she has never gotten a rash from a wet night dipe.

As long as my LO slept and shes wasn't messy or leaky I didn't overly worry about a wet diaper at night. You can use a fleece liner to wick away wetness if you like though. I alos made sure her system had at least some air flow...
As for excess fabric I've now decided investing in properly sized prefolds are totally worth every penny so its less of an issue but that wasn't always an option..
The general rule
For girls fold excess in back for boys in front for real long prefolds you can even do a little of both.. For just trifolding especially for a girl the prefold can be trifolded the "other" way (width) and layed in a wrap it will give the excess assorbancy where it is most needed.

No way I change diapers at night unless I absolutely have to - it wakes everyone up waaaay too much.
