Most likely what we're doing is passing down genes that grow chunky babies (or reproducing with fathers who did that). People come in all shapes and sizes, and that goes for babies, too.

Jack was 7 12 at birth at 11lbs even at 6 weeks. He's gaining at almost exactly the same rate as his older brother

Nate is 9 weeks old today and had his first well-baby visit.
He was 6lbs1oz at discharge from the hospital and is 8lbs10oz now... an increase of 41 oz. He's gaining at 4.5 oz per week, which is on the low end of OK per the kellymom site. The doc says he's doing great even though he's down in the 2nd percentile for weight. He has great head control, is very alert and interested, smiled throughout the appointment, supports himself great with his legs, is grasping at everything, and cooing like crazy.
Strangely, he's 2nd percentile for weight but 25th for head circumference... that's a big brained baby!
Still, it freaks me out that at 9 weeks my baby is still smaller than 36 of the babies in our DDC were at birth!!!!

I need to get some chunk onto this baby!!!!

OMG he's so cute!

he really is cute cindy! i had skinny babies and fluffy babies and it seems the skinny babies grow into giants and the fluffy babies are on the small side. my stepson was 8.6 at birth, 20lbs by 6 mos and is now 11 and is smaller than most 7 yr olds!

eta: dd1 was 15.14lbs @ 1 yr and 31" tall. that's less than 1% on weight and about 90% on height. she's 17, 6'2" and 170 now!!!

I have been stressing about Veronica's weight for 10wks now. She was 9lbs at birth. I weighed her last Fri and she was just over 10lbs 8oz. Her lowest weight that I know of was 8lbs 6oz. She really hasn't gained that much in 10wks. But she is a super happy and alert baby. She has great head control just like my other 2 did. She is close to rolling over from back to belly. She doesn't seem hungry at all, it isn't like she is starving. She is wetting and pooping at acceptable rates. But I still couldn't shake the uneasiness that the scale gave me. Then I found this article by Dr Jay Gordon. My baby meets all of the things in his list (for instance I have to cut her nails at least twice a week). After reading this I have been more at ease. Everyone comments on how alert and bright her eyes are. She is awake most of the day interacting with us, one could never describe her as being listless. She looks like a perfectly happy and healthy baby. If your Nate is like this as well, I would just relax (as best as a mother can ) and enjoy him I had to stop reading this thread for the most part because it made me feel so inadequate because Veronica, although a nice size a birth, seems like such a peanut now.

Thanks for your responses! It's hard to see all these gorgeous rolypoly babies who are the same age as my little one and not think that something's wrong... but he's really doing great. Like TheresesMommy's LO, he's bright eyed, alert, cooing, kicking, and is generally very agreeable and not fussy.
That article about paying attention to the baby and not the scale is a great one. Thanks for that!

Just wanted to say that my daughter (who's now 10 1/2 years) was in the 10-15 percentile for weight much of her infancy and was always in the 100th percentile for head circumference. She's just always been petite, but perfectly normal in development. It's just hard to find jeans that fit her now.

Also wanted to share some 9 week pics of my NEW daughter. She's looking more like she'll be on the chunky side! (I've had two skinny ones and two chunky ones! Weird.)

my lo was 10'4 at birth and is 14 lbs even at 2 months.

Spiral- I know every babe is different, but my lo nevers gets both sides during a feeding. Actually, he'll get the same side for two feedings in a row.

OMG Pjs, how do you stand the pain!? I feel like my boobs are going to burst if I don't feed him both sides. I have to pump a bit to relieve the pressure if he sleeps more than 3 hours, it hurts so much!

I think my supply has just regulated itself. I rarely feel "full"- maybe on the occasional night when he hasn't woken up for the 4 am feeding I'll be pretty full come 6:30 am but other than that they usually each feel the same.

I have had similar concerns, and on that list, I can't say fully yes to the question "Is your baby eager to nurse?" -- many times I have try coax her to nurse (but not always. Also, she fusses a lot.
