cleaning ceramic cooktops

Advice please?

I don't know how to clean my ceramic cook top. The manual says to use a 'scraper' but i don't know what this means exactly. What kind of scraper?
I know to use the ceramic cleaner after getting harder stuff off, but I don't know what to scrape with.

Is there an alternative to the ceramic cleaner after the hard bits are off?

I just use a plastic pancake tuner thingy (spatula?) that is destined for the dishwasher to scrape anything off. No idea about the cleaner, the house came with a bottle of special cleaner and it hasn't run out yet.

I use the ceramic cleaner on a little scrubbie pad to get any spots off. The rest gets wiped with a wet/soapy cloth and dried with a microfibre cloth (that really makes it shine, esp. since mine is black).

I've used Cerama Bryte and bought the kit that came with the scaper. Worked like a charm! Good luck!

I use one of those scrapers you buy at the hardware store that has a razor blade in it.
I do use the cleaners made for ceramic cooktops. I'm fairly chemically sensitive, and it doesn't bother me. I still have these silver rings around the edges of my burners though, that no matter what I do won't come off. I don't know what they are.

I've also heard that BarKeeper's Friend is safe for the ceramic cooktops. I looked around online and found that quite a few people use it (a tiny amount) successfully. I cannot be certain on it's safety for the cooktops, but BarKeeper's Friend actually makes a can of their stuff that says "cooktop" on the front.

Baking soda (moistened) actually works quite well to scrub off burnt on food.

It means one of those razor blade scrapers that someone else mentioned. I have one that came with our stove when we bought it.
Here is one. It's $29 for a pack of 10 so you should be able to buy one at your hardware store for less than $3. It works really well and doesn't damege your ceramic top.

You can buy a kit at places like Walmart. It should come with cooktop cleaner, a plastic scrubber pad and a razor blade monted on a safety handle. All the instructions come with the kit. I use it on my cook top when there's a buildup and it keeps it looking just like new.

We had (note the past tense of the word) dark top ceramic cook top on our stove and, while we cleaned it and got the big chunks of stuff off, we didn't both getting all the stains off. I say 'had' b/c the ceramic cook top creacked over the weekend while cooking. I've checked online quickly and I could only find a replacement for about $600 - more than a new stove would cost. Figures this would happen right before Thanksgiving. Well, at least the oven still works.

Oh no! Do you know how it happened? I usually only cook on level 5 unless it's to boil water or pasta. And I'm really careful when I put the hot lids I just removed from a cooking pot.

DH was cooking and had drained some pasta in the colander and was turning around to put it back in to the pit when our nine year old came in the kitchen. She tried to squeeze behind him and they kind of got tangled and DH ended up putting the pot down on the stove hard and it must have hit at just the wrong angle and cracked. Two burners are useless now (one is pretty shattered, the other has a big crack through it). I don't know if it's safe to use the other two. They weren't damaged that we can see, but maybe there's damage we can't see. At least the oven part still works, but we have it all unplugged right now. After the incident happened, we noticed the "hot cooktop" light stayed on all the time. We didn't want to risk anything weird happening so we unplugged the whole thing. I may go out and get a portable electric eye burner and cook from there for a while. We're also going to check out used stoves on Craigslist and see how they cost.

I am not a neat cook, I drip stuff on the stove, let the pots boil over and so on and I have yet to get gunk that I can't get off with a combination of soaking with homade glass cleaner and water. For the really bad stuff, I use Barkeeper's Friend and a green scrubby pad.

Letting the cleaner sit on the gunk for a while makes all the difference in our house.

We had a top break too. For this reason alone, I will never get another flat top.

Something fell from about 18 inches above the top and cracked the entire left side. It was close to $500 to replace.
