Watching a *HOMEBIRTH* on A Baby Story!!!!

I am so thrilled - this episode is showing an African American couple having their baby at home!!! She is the reigning Mrs. Maryland and he plays for the Baltimore Ravens and I have to say - I am so thrilled with this episode.

No controversy, no emergencies, just a beautiful home waterbirth. Pretty darn cool if you ask me.

Oh, I remember seeing that episode. Very cool, indeed. Here in Canada we have a few different birth story type shows that do homebirths all the time. It's refreshing from the constant stream of typical scheduled repeat c-sections. (not that there's anything wrong with them if they are truly necessary)

I watched one the other day on DHC called "Free Birthing" and it was about 2 different ladies birthing at home without MW's (I guess you all knew that, but I didn't know that's what "free birthing" meant) Anyway, one lady had no urge to get the placenta out so they went to the ER in an ambulance after several hours, the Dr there was so rude to her and they demanded to take the baby for testing and then called social services on her saying she had been neglectful of her child's health. The cool part of this is, she lives 1/4 a mile from the house we sold in Colorado Springs, CO and I recognized her house LOL. I was apphauled that the DHS group was called just because she transfered for her own health. In the end, all she had to do was push a bit and the placenta slipped right out. It was very cool and scary for me at the same time. watching/hearing them yell out in pain. But I've done something similar just in the hospital instead.

Ditto! I've done two in a hospital, never again.

I feel the same way! A friend told me she would be too scared to do a homebirth and I told her that I felt the same way about having a hospital birth. EEEEK!

I was too scared for a hospital birth, and having to transfer to one confirmed all my worst fears! Hopefully never again.

Yes to the above and I had 4 hospital births before my homebirth. Never again if at all possible to avoid.

My home birth was near silent... I know birth does not have to be screaming painful or scary. I wish they showed more peaceful births on TV!

Unfortunately, that wouldn't make for "good TV."

I totally agree but like copperfox said, it doesn't make for "good" TV. I guess that is why I was so delighted with this episode of A Baby Story. They made it seem like such a normal, natural, and uncontroversial decision for this obviously well-off, educated couple to have their baby at home with the midwife.

Most of the mainstream media has portrayed families who chose homebirth as poor uneducated back-woods anti-disestablishment types (which we all know this is in fact NOT the case!). I appreciate that it was shown in this episode as a legitimate birthing choice for a healthy woman. (I think she was GBS + because she had IV antibiotics at the onset of labor, though I don't remember the show mentioning that.)

I had to drag this back up. Just watched an episode of Dora the Explorer that was on while I was welcoming my daycare kids this morning....was interesting that they showed Dora finally arriving home and mom was tucked into bed in her nighty with the babies (twins) sleeping peacefully in their cradle.

No mention of hospital, or urgentness other than excitement over babies arrival! Her extended family was hanging out in the living room, making baby "buttons" for everyone to wear. How cool was that?!

They did have a lot of bottles flashing around which I wasn't crazy about, but then I don't expect them to show Dora's mommy breastfeeding either. I just had to share. Sorry for the "kids show" chatter...I run daycare, it just blurbs out sometimes :P

Moved to Television.

I would not have read about this if it had not been posted in May 2010 DDC. It is helpful to talk about such things being in the media while we all prepare for our birth days to come.

As a teenager I used to Baby Story all the time. It was the crazy, scary, screaming, loud, hectic hospital births that had me not ever wanting to have a baby. But then, they showed a home birth and it was like "Aaaahhh! Thats possible?!" They planted that seed in my head, and while I did have a hospital birth (state medical insurance wouldnt even think about a home birth or birth center) I was blessed to have a CNM, and a quiet, peaceful, loving, drug/intervention free birth.
