I am THAT mom and I have a lot of fun as do my children. There is fun in order, discipline and respect, too.

As for my kids being my guides, if I really followed that we'd have sugar cereal at every breakfast, three sweet snacks a day, 4 trips to the park in one afternoon and no one would ever brush their teeth.

To the OP -

I think 3 year old kids can pick up their messes. I know they are perfectly capable of it because my kids have been picking up their toys since 2, one even earlier than that.

Sure, we run into some refusals now and then, which isn't a big deal. But once we did have what seemed to be a month-long toy pick-up strike.

I dealt with that by telling the kids if Mom had to pick the toys up, then Mom got to do whatever she wanted to do with them. And that meant they disappeared for awhile. There were a few days they were okay with that, and the next couple of days (once even an entire week), we had nothing in the house but books. When the toys came back, they quickly realized they didn't want Mom picking them up anymore.

Haven't had an issue since, other than the typical whining about doing it, but they do it.
