Pregnant moms with epilepsy?

I am a first time poster. I am about 12 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and was just diagnosed with epilepsy last week. I had a few seizures in my sleep and woke up disoriented and with a really sore tongue, but I didn't know it was seizures. It happened once the beginning of Sept, and again the beginning of Oct. Then last week DH woke up during one and realized it was seizures. I ended up having 3 that morning and the ambulance was called during the last one. I am now on meds and am trying to learn all I can about how this will effect my pregnancy and my natural birth plans. The docs at the ER were very discouraging when they learned I was planning on delivering with a midwife, even in a hospital.
When I mentioned to the neurologist I was planning on using a midwife he kind of just shrugged and said if she would do it that was fine but he didn't think she would. I called my midwife and her nurse said that she would still take me, but I haven't actually talked to her yet. My first appointment is next week.
I am looking for other moms with epilepsy and what this has meant for pregnancy and natural birth plans?

I don't see a problem with a midwife birth as long as they have Ativan they can give you either IM or IV if you go into uncontrollable seizures.
Also, stay on your meds and follow up as scheduled. Have they done any EEGs?
I haven't had a seizure in like 4 years and my EEG was actually normal much to my surprise. That doesn't mean I am clear, but I feel confident that things will be ok.

I know an epileptic mother IRL. She had a midwife-assisted hospital birth. She wanted a homebirth but the midwives weren't comfortable with it; however, it was also her first baby, etc. If she has another child I think she'll be looking at a home birth.

It was totally fine. No problems at all.

Hi there,

I came across your post and I was recently diaganosed with epilepsy too. I am 32 weeks pregnant right now. How are you handling your diagnosis? I myself am going to be delivering in a hosp. with an obgyn due to medical concerns during my pregnancy and they are wanting to induce a week early. This has all been very crazy and concerning. It's life changing isn't it?

What are you thoughts on all this?
