First Birthday "Cake"

My daughter is turning 1 on Friday and my mom is insisting that she have some kind of cake thing to eat at her party while grown ups are having cake. But I feel like 1 is too young to start giving a kid sugar. What did you/will you serve for first birthdays? I haven't been able to find a recipe that doesn't have some kind of added sweetener--anyone have a sugar-free cake/muffin/other baked good recipe that would be okay for a 1 year old to eat?

For my kids' parties, I made whole-wheat carrot cake (honey instead of sugar....I figured honey was OK by then, but that call is up to you....beet sugar works, too). I added in all sorts of yummies like raisins and flax seeds, too. Topped with white-grape-juice concentrate-sweetened cream cheese frosting.

For ODS's family celebration, I put blueberries into a ramekin and topped with unsweetened fresh whipped cream....looked like a cupcake and I whipped the cream enough to support a candle.

Second kid had a banana-bread cake (amazing that folks asked me for the recipe....I cooked it in a bundt pan and just the different, non-loaf shape threw them off!). Again whole-wheat with yummy extras and honey to sweeten. I think I just dusted that with a little castor sugar, or maybe I did a glaze of honey....can't remember!

There are lots of great wholesome recipes out there...just spend some time googling!

I used a regular yellow cake mix back then for the bunny cake for guests and I poured one cupcake-full amount for DD. (MIL also made a Texas sheet cake from scratch.) I topped DD's with plain, whole milk yogurt. It looked like a regular cupcake in the pictures and to the guests. DD only licked off the yogurt because that is all she liked.
