I am officially done...

...recommending flats/prefolds as money-saving solutions for newborns. Having now diapered 2 babies from birth, I am going to say wholeheartedly that middle-of-the-night diaper fumbles are a bad thing.

Which isn't to say it can't be done if it's important to you--almost anything can be done if it's important to you--just that I no longer recommend it for most people most of the time. I'm super-experienced with prefolds and I still can't deal with them right now.

My new recommendation for newborns is fitteds if you can afford them, keeping in mind that many brands have high resale value and/or will fit well past the newborn stage so you may indeed get your money's worth; and disposables if you can't afford fitteds, at least until the cord falls off. I wouldn't use disposables myself--I personally think they're gross--but, again, you have to balance that with screaming baby, half-asleep parent, dark house, etc.

Pockets or AIO's would probably be fine too but I have no experience with either on a newborn so I can't make a specific recommendation.

Oh yeah...and this is my first experience dealing with meconium (DD1 was breech and squeezed it all out during labor) and I definitely think the disposable liners are worth it!!!

Totally understand and agree... I have flats and prefolds waiting for the new baby and am perfectly fine and proud that my overall stash will be these but I've also managed to collect about a dozen fitted and AIOs to toss into the mix (more than I need ) for this very reason heck I even have plans to own at least on bag of sposies to make middle of the night brainless diaper changes easier if needed. Yes we can do flats people did for hundreds of years but ummm yea...

Totally with ya. I'm cd'ing for the 4th time and the pfs were just not happening for nighttime changes around here. That's why Kissaluvs 0s were invented.

That is really good feedback - thanks! I think getting used fitteds is an option too for those who are ok with used dipes. They may be hard to find if they're in high demand, but I think buying them used and then reselling would be the most economic choice as far as fitteds go.

i agree. prefolds were my only option with both my newborns and they were a giant PITA. I love flats for babies that are done pooping at night and yo u don't have to change them though. but flats and prefolds in the middle of the night are just a recipe for even more sleep-deprivation.

Haven't started ttc yet (next month--yippee!), but after 3 babies, I already know I want some fitteds for #4. I like the idea of a combo of pf's and fitteds. I want something easy for night changes, and easy for dh, since he doesn't like pins and I plan to do lots of handknit soakers and longies, which don't mix well with snappies. I love pinned prefolds, but not in the middle of the night! I plan to either buy used or use the incredibly inexpensive velcro Snugglebottoms.

I'd like to know how you ladies are changing a baby in the dark without waking up completely... I can't manage it in the dark if I'm awake, much less asleep, and we use fitteds.

We used newborn prefolds and I thought that they worked great! Of course my husband did all the night changes LOL...

I used prefolds from the beginning with my daughter and I always loved them. She is one now and I still only use prefolds.

This is my first cd experience with newborn and I am happy with my pfs. I have only a few fitteds that were given to me that are not as soft and don't hold as much as the prefolds. She will be 2 wks on Mon and we have not used one sposie or leaked poop onto clothes once!!!!! Only occassionally on the covers. I admit I am pride of myself. Oh, not using a snappy or pin either, just lay in cover and jellyroll fold. My covers are made of fleece from fabric.com. My MIL used a bummis cover and a thirsties cover as patterns. I didn't even splurge on the $$$ GMD pfs. These are basic ubipf in infant size. My baby was 9#10oz so maybe that makes a difference.

mecconium stained a little, but was no biggie for me. She only had about 3 though, she pasted a lot during birth.

So my newborn stash is about half and half prefolds/flats and fitteds. I take it it makes more sense to use the prefolds during the day and fitteds at night? More or less what I was going to do but good to have confirmation!

(the fitteds are as much for DH as for me... I wanted something for him that was going to be a little easier to manage if I wasn't available)

Interestingly, now that dd is a week and a half old, the umbilical cord has fallen off, and we're more settled in our routine, I find I am using prefolds during the day. I bought some AIO's to use at night because I really am horribly bumbly in the middle of the night and will forget everything I know. I even put fitteds on inside out!

The prefolds are working fine during the day now that she is in her second week of life! I am Snappi fastening them, and she only poops a little at a time so nothing is getting on the covers. I might be more fitteds-inclined if I were having to clean up a lot of poopsplosions.

I actually love prefolds for the ittybitty stage- they never leak for me but fitteds often do around the scrawny chickenlegs.

My favorites for night though are the drybees fleece diapers, bulky as heck, bu they do. not. leak.

This is kinda my thinking behind how I wanted my set up to be. I'll admit I haveprobably way more diapers than I need for the NB stage
11 fitted 3 AIOs 24 prefolds and 12 flats and a ton of covers that was mommy getting to shop again for baby-itis syndrome
