Honestly, I don't think that monitoring hearttones with an ear toward evaluation is conducive to the labor pattern that gets babies born. Either you're in "laborland," or you're not.

Additionally, learning to interpret variations in hearttones is a skill that requires practice. I don't know how one would learn without experience and guidance.

If the steady "thump thump" is all you're looking for, then by all means, rent a doppler--but please don't let it supplant your intuition!
