Please tell me what washer you have and why you love or hate it

My current washing machine's days are numbered. I'm hoping to get something to replace it soon to end its (and my) misery. lol!

Anyway... I think I want a front loading machine because of water conservation and capacity. There are so many brands I just don't know where to start so I thought I'd ask here.

Which machine do you have and why do you love it or hate it? At least this will give me a little advice to get started. I'm hoping maybe once I know what I want I can find a good black Friday sale.

TIA

We have a fisher and paykel top loader - the ecosmart. There are some things I like about it and some things I am not so thrilled with.

Likes - it was a lot cheaper than a front loader, it is water-efficient, it spins the load so well that it dries faster, needs less soap than my old top loader did, my dad paid for it

Dislikes - no onboard water heater, doesn't rinse very well (have to use less soap - sometimes the stuff is really dirty and I'd like to use more soap, or if I do use more then I have to rinse twice, thus negating the water savings.)

We've had it 6 years now and it has been a reliable washer. No problems with it so far. Next time we buy a washer I really want an onboard heater so that will be a deciding factor, provided we are not as restricted on price again. If we are, I would buy a F&P again.

Thanks, that's good to know about the onboard heater. I haven't heard of the F & P brand. I'm going to try to go out to an appliance store later this afternoon to browse around. I'm excited, but not looking forward to spending the money!

I Got a new Kenmore He2T in march, I got it for $850. at sears there was a sale and then i got employee discount from my dad. I love it love it love it. it has an internal heater (that is what the T means). It gets my diapers clean, that is why we paid extra for the heater. the only thing that you may not like is that it can be kinda loud when spinning (i thing it sounds like a spaceship taking off and landing). This could be because it's in the kitchen (we don't have a laundry room or anything). but it doesn't bother me. it spins really well (clothes dry quicker) it gets your clothes clean w/ little soap. don't get caught up thinking you need to buy expensive "He" soap, i use any kind just put in a very little amount (like a tbs depending on the concentration). when its in use don't put anything on top of it, it will shake it of during the spin cycle (it could be due to being on one of those pedestal things though). It was a really good price compared the other brands i looked at w the same features. My mom has the same thing but w/o the heater and its just as good (but doesn't have the sanitary cycle that i used for diapers). I highly recommend this. Oh and it lets you chose spin speed and water temp, but its not too complicated (my MIL had to show me a few times how to use hers, there was too many things on hers lol)

My mom got the HE front loaders from Lowe's I think. She thought they would save her energy bill... they didn't. The dryer was not hooked up properly (THEY came and hooked it up- not my mom) and the heater never worked properly. She called them and called them because she was having to run the dryer multiple times to get the stuff kind of dry.. eventually like the third time out they realized what they did wrong and fixed it. She likes it now but apparently the hook ups on them is more complicated than regular machines.. It DOES run very quietly.

I have a whirlpool from Sears. It is an ordinary top load. The timer went out after we had it less than a year, but they came out and fixed it at no cost to me and then I haven't had an issue since. We use our washer every single day.

We have an LG front loader. I mostly hate it. We started getting a mildew smell about 6 months after purchasing it. LG wouldn't do anything about it except make suggestions. Have to leave the door open and dry the gasket after using it. Still have the smell. We clean it with vinegar and used the Affresh tablets that are supposed to remove the odor to no avail. Within the last year it started leaking out the front of the door, sometimes just a few large drips, sometimes a steady stream. Out of warranty when that started, of course. Luckily, we purchased the stands so we have to open the drawer and insert a tub to catch the water. Haven't noticed any water savings. On the positive side, it does clean well and the clothes come out really wrung out well so that drying is very quick.

I want one too for the water savings and the dryer clothes from the better spin cycle.

I have heard about the mildew problem from friends that have them.....maybe there is a way to check for problems with that though?

I have the fisher and paykel washer too and love it . The intuitive has a diaper cycle, butwe have the ecosmart. I think running on a hot cycle gets them nice and clean and we use soap nuts! It's really nice having the top loader, less bending with babe in a sling good luck picking!

You know the other place to check for great info on appliances is thathomesite.com. They are an amazing resource for all things related to the home. I read about the mildew/smelly issue on some front loaders on there.

If money were no object, I'd seriously consider a European brand of front loader like a Miele.

Oh just thought of another thing, if any one is looking on this and thinking to get a dryer to match, don't do it. I have read up on this and every time I have read the same thing, the dryers aren't that much different than the "old school" dryers when it comes to saving energy, and the older ones are way cheaper, my MIL has a matching dryer w/ her He washer, and when I have used it, I haven't noticed a difference between that and the older ones. we got ours from Craig's list for $100, i love Craig's list!

Thank you so much for all of the responses. Please keep them coming. They are so helpful and both my dh and I really appreciate them!

We did go out last night and looked at some in person. My dh liked an LG model (though not so sure about that now given pp experience) and I liked a Bosch model, but we're still not sure and want to keep looking around. The price on the Bosch is a little tough to take even w/the rebates going right now.

We have an LG front loader and love it!

ALL front loaders can get the mildew smell. You have to wipe the whole thing out when you are done washing for the day, including the soap dispenser area.
You also have to clean out the filter twice a month. It says so in the manual. This will take away the risk of a mildew smell.

I absolutely love my set, and when I bought them, there was a special going on that you got the pedestals for free!

They replaced a 15 year old Maytag set (top loading) and I am just amazed at the size of the loads I can do.

I have the exact same washer and have the exact same problems with it. Not a huge fan. It does clean regular clothes well, but is horrible for diapers- if you use cloth diapers I wouldn't recommend it at all.

We have a Samsung VRT (I can reply back with the exact model number if you are interested). We bought it at Lowe's last Spring.

WE LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!!!!!

I have nothing negative to say about it, only positives:

Our clothes are cleaner than with our old washer. We know it is the washing machine as we are using the same detergent (7th Gen) as before, and with no changes in what we wear or do. And, with less water usage!! I especially noticed it this past Summer, when we washed dh's gardening clothes. With no pre-treating, his dirt-encrusted jeans and socks (how does so much dirt get inside work boots??) came out spotless. Truly amazing!

I use less detergent (only 1 tbls of 7th Generation per load) than in our old top-loader. I find I don't need to pre-treat most of our clothes anymore except, sometimes, my Mom's underwear (she has incontinence problems).

The machine is so quiet, I actually check it sometimes to make sure it is running!

We have had no problems with it wobbling on the spin cycle, as some people do. It is NOT on a concrete floor, either. It is on the pedestal/drawer we bought with it. It is very important to make sure you have it level to avoid wobbles! I only use the "medium" spin setting and the clothes come out waaaaaaaaaay drier than in our old washer. I have used the "high" spin setting and, honestly, didn't feel any difference, so the medium works for us.

DO get a pedestal, if you can. It makes things much easier with loading and removing the clothes. I didn't get a pedestal with our new dryer (different brand) because I like to fold the clothes and stack them as I take them out of the dryer, and you can't do that when the top of the dryer is at your chin level!!

It is easy to use, our 11 year old son asks if he can do the laundry (how nice is that?!).

A regular perm-press load, with warm wash, cold rinse, take 47 minutes. Longer than our old washer, but I have never had to do a load over because they didn't come out clean the first time (something I did have to do, frequently, with our old wahser!).

Our water usage is way down. This is VERY important, as we are on a well. It holds more clothes, so less washes being done each week. We are a family of 3 and I do one full load of jeans and one load of regular clothes each week. Sometimes, I'll have an extra load to do of my Mom's things (she's in assisted living, though I do her laundry). She has problems with incontinence, and her clothes come out wonderfully clean (this type of laundry is truly different than cleaning baby diapers ).

We have had no problems with mildew/smell in the washer. We do wipe down the door window & rubber gasket after each use, but don't wipe the interior, nor the soap dispenser. I keep a folded hand towel over the door, so it is open just a bit to allow air inside. It's certainly not a big deal to do this.

It has made laundry, if not a joy, certainly not a chore anymore!

I HIGHLY recommend the Samsung.

we have the bosch nexxt 300 (i think?? or maybe it's 500?) series with the shorter pedestals and we LOVE LOVE LOVE them! ours were rather pricey as we've had them several years and they've come down quite a bit in price since then. i will say that with anything else in life, you get what you pay for.

what i love....hmm, everything? no seriously, we have all the bells and whistles on our set. the onboard heater is awesome and the moisture sensors in the dryer are spot on so it doesn't run too long. we also have a feature that continuously fluffs after the dryer goes off to keep things from wrinkling. we have a 'kids care' cycle that is a miracle on muddy clothes, paint, etc. and we have a delicate cycle and a 'handwash' cycle so i can safely wash all our down stuff and my cashmere. this list could go on and on so i'll stop there.

i sincerely don't have one bad thing to say about them....cross my heart. i would buy them again for sure!

regarding the mildew/mold issue: it's my understanding that your climate (and the climate in your home) has a lot to do with this as well. i have NEVER left my door open between washes, etc., have never wiped it down, have never run any kind of special cleaner through it and have never had any issues whatsoever. again, this issue is pretty hit or miss and i'm not sure it has anything to do with the actual units. but hey, i'm no expert! lol! just from what i've read!
It's good to read the post above because I was kind of freaking out about my new LG's.

I do think climate has a lot to do with it. On the particular model that I got, I read every review I could find online and found next to none negative reviews. I think that you have to load the front loaders as specified, and you have to drain that little thing on the bottom every two weeks according to the manual. I just do it on the 1st and the 15th. I also wipe it out (and the soap dispenser) and leave the door open and the soap thing open to air out when I'm not using it.

Our home is really dry and I only ever have it at 63 degrees, 67 in the summer, so probably not a great place for mildew to grow. I am hoping. I keep the laundry room door open, too. It's on the main level next to the kitchen so I am hoping that all of those factors will cut down on the chances of mildew smell. I am really worried now. I did so much research... sigh... I hope I got a good machine. For over $2000 for the set, I really really hope I did.

I have a Bosch. I forget which model it is but it does heat it's own hot water. I have only used front loaders for the past 13 years. The Bosch has that stinky front load problem constantly. It is a battle. I finally found a detergent that keeps it to a minimum (Biokleen) and I use the front loader cleaners once a month. But I still have problems.

I used to have an Asko and I never had a problem with a stinky smell except in August if I left a load in the washer for 2 days. We lived in a VERY humid place. It has been a shock to have to deal with this now. Asko has a lot of problems these days. I know a couple of appliance stores that refuse to carry it anymore. I would not recommend the brand for that reason.

I lust for a Miele and am kicking myself that I did not spring for one instead of the Bosch.

Thank you for that site.... It has a separate laundry forum that was very helpful.

I'm beginning to think it will be a gamble no matter which brand we choose because I have seen both positive and negative (especially regarding the stinky mold issue) w/all brands. It seems like you either get it or you don't. And some manufacturers add in extra drainage holes at the bottom of the door gasket and add a special interior cleaning cycle so help w/the problem but still some people get the mold. ugh.... decisions, decisions!

Please keep the replies coming to add to the discussion. They are really appreciated!

Frigidaire front loader bought in 2000. I like it because it still works. We only had one problem with water not draining and it was because there was stuff (from our pockets) stuck in the drain. It was easy to fix by going to an online forum and asking questions. It was also fairly inexpensive.
