I know being ahead is not the point...but I do feel satisfaction

I pulled my dd out of 1st grade about a month and half ago. She was reading at a beginning first grade level. We have spend hours of me reading aloud and her reading short books of her choice to either myself or her little brother. About 2 days ago, she picked up a chapter book and read me a page to which I was thrilled, but she said that's all she'd read. Then yesterday when I sat down to finish my read aloud to her, she offered to read to me first. She read me an entire chapter of a magic treehouse book. In the car this morning (traveling downstate) she just started reading the next chapter outloud and finished the chapter. This morning I read online that magic treehouse books are officially a 3rd grade reader?!?!?!?! How cool is that. If our homeschooling continues to go this well, I will be sooooo happy!

It is exciting to see how they progress, isn't it? Just yesterday, I was noticing that DD is reading aloud more fluently, not having to say every word slowly to sound it out before saying it, even when she's reading a new book cold, in a series of progressing difficulty (BOB books, collection 2). She's also picking up more quckly on new phonics rules as they're introduced than she was a month ago. I think it's starting to click for her.

Well, my firstie girl is very much still slowly progressing in reading, but she is blowing the gp's away with multiplication! Although it really makes no difference to me, the fact that she's getting her times tables (without drill, btw), has convinced them that homeschooling is okay, lol.

And yes, it does feel very good to know that our hs'd child would not be getting this in ps and is "getting ahead" by working at her own pace at home!

I can't wait for the day when she feels comfortable enough to pick up a chapter book and read through it fluently.....sometimes I'm like, "what am I doing wrong?" with the reading, but she is still progressing, and we do a little every day. She is on grade level, so I need to chill out about it.

Congrats on your dd's reading leap! Isn't it great to be a part of such an important milemarker? Instead of letting a teacher soak it up, we get the joy instead! Hooray for homeschooling!

that's wonderful.

my dd falls asleep every night with books all around her. she has been reading for a while, but her love for reading is really taking off these past few months. it is awesome to see her really enjoy books now and simply get lost in them

Reading is that one biggie that gives me that "I can do this - it's all going to be ok..." feeling. They learn to read and they've unlocked the key to a lifetime of learning Huge step momma, definitely something to celebrate!
