Bottom shelf in the door of my freezer...

What the heck is it for??

Does anyone else have this, and can you tell me what it's good for?

We have an upright freezer and I use the racks on the door for jars. The bottom shelf of the door has a wire cage in front of it, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't rotate out or move in any way so you can use that space for storage. (I have been putting flat boxes like cake mix in there, but it's hard to get them out....) Is there some functionality there that I'm missing, or are you not supposed to use that space for some reason?

Is it a frozen juice can holder? Maybe it's for bacon? I don't have the same shelf in my freezer, I don't think.

I thought it would be for something like juice cans, where the bottom of the cage would stay put and be the hinge, and you could pull/rotate the top edge out to access the stuff in there, but it doesn't seem to move at all (and it's taller than juice can size, so that's not it....). I can just barely slide boxes of cake mix (or bacon, if we ate bacon....) in there, but if it's not full and the boxes fall over, you can't get them out all that easily, so it just doesn't seem to be all that functional.

I'm either blind or stupid....

The freezer is white. The inside is white. The shelf is very close to the ground.... I was right in its function, but didn't see (for several years ) the piece of industrial-strength tape (also white) they secure it with for packing.....
